It is true that the meaning of discrimination is extremely broad and highly malleable, depending on social, religious, political, and cultural contexts. Its interpretation has evolved in many different ways over the centuries. Today, there is no global standardization of the term, and the intolerance often associated with it is somewhat simplistic when considering all the regional variations and historical transformations of its meaning.
