When a class teacher ask a student; Do you want to fail?, the answer will always be "NO" in 99.99% cases. This implies that no student plans to fail intentionally. So why then do some student's fail?.
In the course of this articles, I will be highlighting specifically, some notable reasons why student's fail in school.

Students fail because of various reasons and few of these include;

  • Fear of failure:

Students who might have fail before, get intimidated with the very thought of failing again, thereby developing a lifelong fear which tends to hinder them from succeeding.
Students should be make to understand that failure is also a part of success, and as such there is need to embrace it open-handely rather than being afraid of it.

  • Lack of academic mentorship:

Students should always look for someone, most importantly someone who have passed through the academic system to guide them through some difficulties in their academic pursuits.
I can remember when I started my academic sojourn in the University of Uyo, I never knew my left from right. I needed someone to put me through some certain things in the institution.
There was this room-mate of mine, he was actually in his finals and was about to leave the system. I needed to talk to him to put me through some certain things. I remember my first test in PHY111, how he advice me on the chapters to read and even encourage me not to over think while reading. The night to the test was never an eventful one, but I needed to read because my roommate who happen to be my academic mentor gave me a tasks of chapters to complete that night before sleeping . To cut the whole story short, I wrote the test and happen to score the highest in a test were a high level of failure was recorded across all departments.
One of the advantage of having an academic mentor, is that you tends to have a sense of responsibility to report to someone your academic challenges, who in return will guide you to be successful in your academic pursuits.

  • Adopting a bad reading approaches/style:

The fact that "student A"reads 4hours and is excelling academically does not mean that "student B" will also Excel if he/she decide to adopt the same reading hours.
The secret here is for you to take out sufficient time to examine yourself to determine what is best for you, rather than imitating other students.
If you know going to the library is not good for you, then stop going there. If you know you best assimilate easily at night, ensure you use your night efficiently for studies. Don't allow yourself to be intimidated by your fellow colleagues.
Also, avoid reading with dimlight in the night, avoid reading in companies of lousy friends because you may end up been distracted.
And finally, always read when you are sure you are physically and mentally stable to ensure high level of apprehension.

  • Lack of proper rests:

Studies have revealed that a good hours of sleep aid to relax the brain and make the brain to rejuvenate. A notable number of students spent hours reading during exam period, without giving themselves adequate rests. Any student who doesn't want to fail his/her exams should ensure to rest properly, as resting will help improves his/her memory and retention capacity.

  • Poor financial status:

A student who is financially unstable may not be able to purchase the necessary materials such as; textbooks, lecture manuals, laptop and other gadgets that might be needed to enhance proper learning and research.
Invariably, when a student have a poor financial status he/she may find it difficult to feed properly and as such his learning process will be negatively affected.
Also, poor financial status may spur up some student's to look for other alternatives to meet their financial needs which could serves as a great deal of distraction thereby hindering their academic success.

  • Over-confidence:

In life too much of everything is always bad, the same is applicable to confidence. Inasmuch as confidence is good, being Over-confidence is very bad.
When a student is Over-confidence of his/her skills and academic knowledge, complacency might set in, and as such, he/she may not be able to study at is optimal level and might end up failing during exams.
It is pertinent for a student who is Over-confidence of himself/herself to takeout time to relearn whatever he/she might have known so as not to allow pride destroy him/her.

Other notable reasons why students fail includes;

  • Lack of interest in a particular course:

Any student who lack an interest in a particular course will always find it hard to pass such a course.

  • Having a pessimistic mindset toward exam success.

  • Having too many engagement as a student.

  • Inability to properly examined the trend of exam past questions.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the success or failure of any student during examinations solely depends on the student itself, irrespective of the external factors hovering around him/her.
For a student to excel academically, he/she must learn how to prepared adequately for examinations. These feat could be achieved by being diligent, hardworking, committed and passionate in studying.
Are you a dilligent, hardworking, committed and passionate student?, If not, try and be one today.
