LET'S TALK ABOUT PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR (UGWO)
Pityriasis versicolor also called Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection of the skin.
It is one of the common fungal skin infections seen.
*It is known with different names by different people and in my place, we call it "Ugwo" 😊🙂.

WHAT CAUSES IT?
a.It is caused by a fungus known as Malassezia furfur.
b.Malassezia furfur are most often normal flora (good microbes) of the body. They stay on the skin and feed on the lipids found there.
c.They help to protect us against some other opportunistic and desperate pathogens.

HOW DOES IT MANIFEST AND THE SYMPTOMS?
Sometimes, due to the overuse of antibiotics, antiseptics, soaps, among other causes; other normal flora of the skin which help to keep the fungus in check are reduced; this makes them (Malassezia furfur) to overgrow.
a.The resultant overgrowth brings about the change in pigmentation.
b.The change in pigmentation could be hyper or hypo (high or low) pigmentation (patches of skin discoloration) and this is the main symptom.
Sometimes, it can itch too.
a.Among the areas where you can see this pigmentation, the trunk, neck and the shoulder parts are very distinguished.
b.The above statement does not mean that you can't see it in other body parts, remember that it is a skin disease.
c.Studies also have it that it is not contagious (not passed from person to person) and that it can be treated.

TREATMENTS
a.Pityriasis versicolor can be treated by the use of topical antifungal drugs; sometimes, oral antifungal drugs can be administered to kill the fungi from within.
b.In some people, the colour may never become like before again even after treatment.

PREVENTIONS
You can prevent Pityriasis versicolor by taking proper care of your skin, by minding the drugs and soaps you use often, by making sure your skin moisturized always.

Please if you have any question regarding pityriasis versicolor feel free to chat me up. Hope you read it carefully ?
