Steemit Learning Challenge-S22W1; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome"
How are you all steemians? I hope you all steemians will be safe and sound by the grace of Allah Almighty and I'm fine too Alhamdulillah. Today I am here to share my participation in week no 1 of the steem learning challenge season 22 organized by @askhan.
Steemit Learning Challenge-S22W1; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome"
Definition
- A medical condition that occurs when the median nerve is compressed. This nerve supply the hand and forearm and passes through the carpal tunnel.
Causes
There is a variety of factors which can cause carpal tunnel syndrome let's discuss about them.
- Performing such tasks that are repetitive involve the flexion of wrist like typing, use the mouse and musical instruments playing can cause inflammation in the carpal tunnel.
In some people by nature the length of the carpal tunnel is small and it is also a cause of the carpal tunnel syndrome.
Some medical conditions can also cause development of the carpal tunnel syndrome such as diabetes.
It is thought that the carpal tunnel syndrome arises from the deposition of myxedematous tissue in the carpal tunnel area.
Hormonal changes can cause swelling in the carpal tunnel area such as during pregnancy.
Symptoms
The symptoms associated with the carpal tunnel syndrome are mentioned below 👇
- Numbness and tingling sensation in the thumb, middle finger and finger which is named as ring finger.
The persons with the carpal tunnel syndrome experience pain in those areas of the arm which the median nerve supply suh. As wrist and hand and fingers. The pain is usually radiating to the arm up and can cause pain or discomfort in the region of neck and shoulders.
Another important symptom is the weakness and the affected person feels difficulty while grasping the objects and also difficulty in doing fine motor activities like grasping a pen.
Most of the people with carpal tunnel syndrome experience symptoms at the time of night. The numbness and tingling sensation can disrupt the sleep.
Types of CTS
It is categories into various kinds on the basis of the several factors. These are mentioned below 👇
idiopathic CTS
The the exact etiology of the carpal tunnel syndrome is unknown. The repetitive movements of the hand can be associated with its risk factors.
Secondary CTS
The type of carpal tunnel syndrome which results from any underlying medical condition like diabetes and RA can cause compression to the carpal tunnel syndrome.
To diagnose a carpal tunnel syndrome there is a combination of
- History of patients,
- Clinical assessment
- Special tests.
Patient history
A physician take a complete history of the patient's symptoms. The history involves how and when it started.
Clinical assessment
A test is called as EMG electromyography. This is for the measurements of the muscles activities and it is helpful to identify the damage to the median nerve which is in the carpal tunnel syndrome.
Special tests
In the department of physio therapy the following special tests are performed to confirm the diagnosis.
- Phalen's Test
- Flicks Test
- Reverse Phalen's Test
- Tinel's Sign
- Median Nerve Compression
Phalen's Test
In this test, the patient's wrist is in the flexion and the backs of the hands are facing against each other. This position is hold for at least thirty to sixty seconds. The test will be positive if the patient feel discomfort or pain.
Tinel's Sign
In the test, the forearm will be in the resting position and wrist with neutral position. In this test the tapping is done over the nerve. The test will be positive if the patient feels sensation of numbness in the region which is supplied by the median nerve.
Median Nerve Compression
The patient position will be sitting with the arms in the resting position on a table.Locate the area of the passage of median nerve and now compress the nerve by applying pressure with your thumb. If the patient feels discomfort while compression the test will be positive.
Thumb stretches
Extensors stretches
Wrist rotation
In this exercise, the arm will be straight extended in front of you and then make a fist of the hands. After that start moving your wrists in a circle motion called as rotations.
These exercises are useful in the mild to moderate cases of the carpal tunnel syndrome. These can reduce the symptoms and pain relief. These are also benifical for those individuals with no carpal tunnel syndrome because it can prevent any future occurrence.

Hello friend greetings to you, hope you are doing well and good.
CTS is the wrist injury where muscles feel severe pain. You can't hold and pick even light things in it. I have been through a such disease. Your explanation make it very easy for us to understand all about CTS. Thank you so much for such a beautiful explanation.
I wish you best of luck in the contest dear friend. Keep blessing.
Jazakallah 🤗 for your kind words.
Thank you for understanding the lesson and sharing your assignment; I hope that you will enjoy this week's lesson and try to implement it in your life if you see any such case.
Observations
Task 1 (2.8/3)
You have shared a great knowledge about carpal tunnel syndrome, its symptoms, cause, and its types. There are 4 types that I explained in the lesson. Acute, chronic, primary and secondary. But you add acute and chronic only. A bit more depth require to complete the answer. I appreciate your effort.
Task 2 (2.9/3)
In the second question, you tell us about how you have to assess a patient by doing physical examination, history taking, special tests and investigations. You can also add NCS for nerve conduction. Great.
Task 3 (3.3/4)
You try the CTS stretches (thumb & extensors stretch), wrist rotations exercises. You did the thumb stretch, wrist rotations and extensor stretch correctly. But it would be better if you add one more exercise as thumb stretch and extensor stretch are from same category. Always remember to apply heat pack before performing exercises to relax the muscles and reduce stiffness. I appreciate your efforts.
Overall you made a great attempt to answer all the questions. I appreciate your efforts. But next time try to avoid the above written suggestions. Keep learning and try to implement your knowledge to the people suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome or any type of wrist. Thank you.
