Contest: My best friend in high school

in STEEM4STUDENTSlast year

Greetings, steemers!

Ready for another contest on this awesome community STEEM4STUDENTS. This is a very nostalgic topic. I wanna thank @ruthjoe for creating this contest in the community, so we can bring back so many good memories. Let's get started!

When I was a little girl, I dreamed about having a friendship like one of those I used to see in cartoons and anime. For me the best depiction of what a friendship should be, was the one of Sakura Kinomoto and Tomoyo Daidouji from the Japanese anime "Sakura Card Captors." I fantasized on having a friend like Tomoyo, who was supportive, caring and cute; but when I started growing up, I realized it was a fantasy, and I only wished I had a friend, just that.
Things changed when I reached high school and finally found the friend I was looking for. The best friend one could ever had.

My best friend in high school

## □Did you have a best friend? What is/was his name? Yes, I fortunately had a best friend in high school. Her name was "Carmen," which is actually my middle name, and a name that has been in my family for generations. She was my friend in spite of being very different to me in personality, reason why I valued her friendship even more.

□Where did you meet and how did you meet?

We met in our classroom the first day of high school. She was already there when I entered the classroom, and she was looking for someone to talk to, but not anyone, she was looking for someone she could connect to. That was me for some reason. I still don't know what she saw in me.

□Does she/he inspire you?

Yes, she inspired me in more than one way. In first place, this girl gave me a lot of advice, so I can say her pieces of advice inspired me, because I was inspired by her experience. Since she was a girl too mature for her age and she had a mindset the same as an adult, she talked to me from her experience. I'm glad I had her by my side at that time.

Secondly, she was an example of someone who works at a very young age. I admired that from her, and I feared she could be not safe out there working that young, but she was a tough girl.

□What best food does he like?

Her taste was quite simple, she liked the same food we are used to eat here commonly, and she loved fish above everything else.
I don't remember talking too much about food with her, actually.

□Are you still communicating with him?

Sadly, not. She died in 2010, three years after we graduated.

It's sad how things go. Carmen was a good girl who had a hard life, and was somehow forced to be more mature at a very young age by her circumstances. On top of things, she had this terrible accident in which she lost both her legs, and two days later died from a heart attack during surgery, leaving a baby behind.

The last time I had talked to her personally was on her birthday in July 2008. I was starting to study in the university, and she had just given birth to her child, Camila. After that, we only had conversations on the phone, especially by text messages.

□Just say some fun things about your friend and every other thing you want to tell us about your best friend.

Carmen had such a sense of humor! She made me laugh everyday at high school even though she wasn't joking all the time, she was just a funny-talker, just like me. You know when someone says something in a serious way, but it sounds hilarious? Well, she was just like that.

Her top advice that I remember, was this "never give a man all of yourself if that man shows no respect for you, only because you are in love." She doesn't know how much I appreciated this piece of advice, and still do. I wished she had had someone who advised her like she did with me, and could have prevented her from doing stuff she sure regretted later.

Thank you @opera.shoujo for sharing about your friend Carmen. I hope her soul is resting in peace. I cannot imagine what her family and friends including you went through and are still going through. She left so early! To share such a traumatising event also needs a lot of courage. You have shown that courage here.

I am thankful for your invitation. I would try to participate in the contest.
