En desarrollo desde 1996, terminado de construir en California y teniendo que ocultar su transporte hasta la Guayana francesa para evitar ser atacados por los piratas, después de varios aplazamientos y unos 10.000 millones de dólares de inversión, hoy ha despegado el telescopio James Webb de la base de lanzamiento de Kourou que la ESA tiene en Guayana.

Pero la cosa no ha hecho más que empezar, además de lo complicado de su construcción, transporte y lanzamiento ahora al James Webb le queda un mes de viaje hasta su destino en el segundo punto lagrangiano, mes al que los responsables del proyecto llaman los "30 días terror", durante este viaje el telescopio tiene que desplegarse hasta adoptar su forma final.

El James Webb salió de la cápsula del cohete Ariane 5 totalmente plegado como si fuese un paraguas para poder meterlo en el cohete, durante estos 30 días el telescopio tendrá que desplegar sus espejos, 18 segmentos exagonales de su espejo primario de 6,5 m que han de configurarse para conseguir una imagen perfecta además de desplegar las láminas que hacen de parasol.

Una vez en funcionamiento James Webb permitirá a los astrónomos mucho más lejos de lo que podían ver con el Hubble, podremos retroceder 13.500 millones en el pasado y observar la formación de las primeras estrellas y galaxias tras el Big-bang gracias a su habilidad para ver en el espectro infrarrojo que le permite detectar objetos más fríos y lejanos.

At the moment, according to the experts, we will have to wait until mid-2022 to receive the first images of the James Webb as it first needs to reach the optimum temperature for its operation and check the operation of all on-board systems.
Hopefully it is worth all the money and effort.

De momento según los expertos tendremos que esperar hasta mediados de 2022 para poder recibir las primeras imágenes del James Webb pues necesita primero alcanzar la temperatura óptima para su funcionamiento y comprobar el funcionamiento de todos los sistemas de a bordo.
Esperemos que merezca la pena tanto dinero y esfuerzo.
