Her : Hey Inshu, what ya doing there?
Me : Hi bubs! Was about to read a novel. What’s up?
Her : Great, replace reading novel with this documentary. I got this must watch documentary. Watch it now and tell me your analysis afterwards.
Me : wait what? C’mon men I have done enough literary analysis for the day. Lemme chill off when I’m taking a rest.
Her : Nahhh bubs, you should watch this now. It’s super creepy. You may find it boring but do watch yeah?

This is a phone conversation that I shared with one of my best friends at the university. I got this random phone call from her in which she asked me to watch a documentary and share my analysis on it with her. I was at first like really bored to watch it and later on I was like, “well… even though I read the novel I would have to analyze it also, why just don’t replace the analysis into a documentary” And most importantly I was really curious to find out the documentary that had even made her called to me and rushed me to watch it. So my curiosity won (as always) and I started to watch.

It was a documentary named “Social Dilemma” which was based on the trap we are heading to when using social media. It was neither creepy nor boring as she told me to. Not at all. I found super interesting, instead. I saw everyday scenarios with social media in a different dimension because of that documentary. And that’s what fascinated me.

There are these two points which attracted my attention the most. First, social media is free for you, others pay for the advertisements in the social media. If you are not paying for it and if the social media is paid because of you, then you are the product . Second, if you are using it as a tool, then it’s okay. But if you are not using it as a tool, it demands too much from you and that’s where the problem lies. Most depressing thing is that people do not see this as a problem and there is no way of finding solutions for a problem as long as you don’t see it as a problem!

There were lots of interesting yet timely issues regarding social medial in that documentary. And my recommendation is that, go and watch it, if you are social media user. After all there is saying that, better the devil you know, that the saint you don’t know. So see the social media that we use everyday in a different dimension with that documentary.

Thanks for reading!

Have a happy time watching it!

Then it'll use You as a tool for sure!
