Movie night| Animal
One of the movies that face a lot of controversies in recent movies would definitely be the Bollywood film; Animal. It is quite natural expect a lot from a movie which claimed to be a work that would change the Indian cinema. However, reviews were filled with both good and bad reviews in which some praises Ranbir Kapoor for his amazing acting skills (as always) and criticizes the movie for promoting toxic masculinity. So I was also tempted to watch the movie anyway to analyze it in my own view to form a personal opinion of mine.
My roomie and I are both Bollywood fans, so we planned to watch it together. It was very hard to find a time that will work for both of us and we realized that we won’t be able to watch it if we waited more. That realization hit when it was already 6p.m., but there was the 10.15pm show at CCC. Her dad agreed to send their driver to pick us since the movie’s duration is almost 3 hours. It was exciting to go for a girls’ movie night.
Well.. coming back to the movie, I don’t know how to feel about that because my feelings a very mixed. On one hand, it seems to very toxic with the way it has portrayed masculinity with many headstrong men, and much more bullets, knives and murders. Even the murders are unnecessarily violent and cruel, and I had to cover my eyes most of the time specially in the second half. It seems like it was set in the men’s world where they will have the final say. So I see where the criticism of promoting toxic masculinity coming from. On the other hand, should a movie try to depict everything and try to balance all? Yes, it is mostly about toxic masculinity but isn’t it something already exit in the world? I would say it is “depicting” that bitter side rather than “promoting” and I personally believe that a literary piece has the freedom to portray many perspectives in the world than “the accepted lens”. However, viewers too have their own freedom to have a personal opinion about the movie.
Anyway, the spark of Animal for me was the remixed Chinna China song and Ranbir’s entrance to that. what do you feel about animal?

On the days I was going to office, I too went to movies with my friends. However, following my retirement, I couldn't watch any films yet from the cinema.
