Warm greetings to all steemians, hope you all are doing good! My name is Zaid and this is an educational post that covers the topic of GitHub Secret Archive Vault in the Pakistan Steemit community.

Introduction

Do you know that we are now at a stage of life where International Organizations are preserving their researches in secret vaults? Just in case, you know, if the apocalypse happens. Within the deep Arctic Circle of the archipelago, which is home to the northernmost town and thousands of Polar Bears, Microsoft, which acquired GitHub for about 7.5 Billion dollars in 2018, now joins others in the vault. The place also includes the Global Seed Vault where millions of various types of seeds are preserved for the upcoming future, ensuring that they can and most surely will last up to 2000 years. Did you guys know that the original recipes of McDonald’s special sauces also lie in those vaults.

The method they used to store

On the other side of Global Seed Vault, there is a reconditioned coal mine that is taken on a new life. This is where every open-source project will be preserved for future generations. The vault has been given the name of GitHub Arctic Vault or GitHub Archive Program. In there, hard copies of the source code for projects stored in GitHub libraries will be locked down here. Github has stored data on ultra-durable films which are coated with iron oxide powder to feature extra durability. The film reels can last for up to 750 years, but if stored in a cold, dry, and low-oxygen place, they can last for up to 1000 years. The threat from hackers is also ruled out here as there are no digital devices that hackers can access.

Is it Good or Bad?

The real question that arises is; is Long Termed Storage even needed in the future?
The CEO of Skymind said,

“Storing all of GitHub's open-source code in a vault in the Arctic sounds both useful and wasteful"

The answer to this question is based on several factors, some of the reasons are great and logical and then there are some concerns that make us think, is it really helping? Well, the question that, why is it a good thing? GitHub answered it with the importance of it,

“There may be a long history of technologies which the planet would have benefitted from are lost now, also because the abandoned technologies which found unexpected new uses, from Roman concrete, or the anti-material DFDT, to the search for mothballed Saturn V blueprints after the Challenger disaster”. Source

The negative effect highlights the very fact that all the software is going to be preserved in Norway in Archipelago, Svalbard, which is mostly covered in ice. If something happens, the access to the vault can be difficult to reach so would that be considered a logical option? Apart from this, it also depends on the nature of the apocalyptic event. Now, these answers, we will see that by the time.

Pakistan Steemit took such a great initiative with these themes. This is all from my side regarding the #wed-education theme. I wrote this article a while back for my university, but I think, this articles contain important information so it will be best to share it with you guys. Hope you guys learned something from it. Until then,

Allah Hafiz

Very well written. You surely gonna become a valuable asset for Steemit Pakistan.

Just a suggestion:

Try justify text of your post. As you you are from Computer science background and you may already know but incase you don't know then here is the way to do it....

Thanks for the appreciation, means a lot.

I do know about justifying text and have used it a lot of times (you can see in my other posts). I also tried it here, but it was creating uneven spaces between the words so I think it was stealing a more natural look from my paragraphs. I know justify neats your work but it surely comes at the cost of unusual and long spaces. Now, those unusual spaces look great if images are on the right or left side of it and since I can't use this much image due to copyright issues, those long spaces were kind of disrupting the paragraph look. It's just my point of view I guess, do let me know if you think otherwise and correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions.
