The Effects of Too Much Screen Time on Children’s Health

Technology is a significant factor in children's lives in today's society. Children are glued to phones, tablets, TVs, computers and video games for hours each day. The screens are now being used for learning, entertainment, communication and social media. While technology may have many advantages, excessive screen time can have a negative impact on children's health in numerous ways. By the time children grow up, their physical, mental, emotional and social health is of great importance and hence this problem must be kept in check by the parents and the society.

Too much screen time can have a significant impact on physical health. Children view videos, play games, or scroll through social media for hours each day while sitting. Because of this, they engage in not moving their bodies enough. Lack of physical activity can lead to weight gain and obesity. Childhood obesity can lead to a host of health issues in adolescence, including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. I've seen that lots of kids these days have a preference to remain inside rather than outdoors with their buddies. Over time, this unhealthful lifestyle can make their bodies weaker.

Excessive amounts of screen time also have an impact on children's eyes. Prolonged screen time can lead to eye strain, blurred vision, headaches and dry eyes. The bright light from screens may make children uncomfortable, especially at night. Some children even say that they feel pain in their eyes when they use the device for a long time. In recent years, vision issues related to excessive screen time have begun to cause vision problems in children, which is why more and more children are starting to wear glasses. This is a great illustration of the importance of taking breaks from screen time.

Lack of sleep is another serious issue. Many children play with the phone or tablet before going to bed at night. Exposure to screens can interfere with the creation of the hormone melatonin that regulates sleep. This can make it difficult for kids to fall asleep or stay asleep. Children may feel tired, weak and unable to concentrate during the day if they do not get a good night's sleep. It can also have an impact on their school performance. In my opinion, kids should get a decent amount of sleep to grow and develop their brains.

Excessive screen time can also have negative consequences for mental and emotional health. Excessive screen-time can lead children to become stressed, anxious, or depressed. Children sometimes feel bad about themselves due to comparing themselves to others in the social media. Children can feel lonely even if they spend lots of time online.Children can feel lonely even if they spend lots of time online. Plus, children might get affected by the negative emotions and behaviour that can be created from violent games or harmful online content. I believe parents should be aware of what their children are consuming online as not everything is good for the young mind.

Excess screen time also can negatively impact children's focus and learning. Excessive video games, gaming and social media play may diminish children's attention spans. May have trouble paying attention to classroom tasks or reading. Some children may even lose interest in learning activities due to screen addiction. Children are sometimes observed to be poor performers in school after using their devices excessively, which can be noticed by their teachers and parents. I have a view that children need a balance between technology and other learning activities.

There can be other dimensions, such as social development. Good social skills can only be developed through face-to-face communication. They learn about interacting, sharing, cooperating and problem solving through activities with family members and friends. But, excessive screen time can impact children's interactions with people around them. Some children don't feel comfortable or shy in real life conversations since they have more experience with online conversation. I believe that it is essential to have real human interaction for emotional development and healthy relationships.

In addition, excessive screen time may lead to addiction. Others get so immersed in their phones or games that they can't get away from them for extended time periods. They may be angry or upset when parents attempt to limit screen time. This addiction can have a detrimental impact on their daily life, studies, relationships and mental health. I think, when kids lose control of their time on screen, that's a bad thing.

Technology isn't all bad, however. Screens are also tools that children can use to learn and develop, be creative, and access education. Children utilize technology in many ways during online classes for studying and researching. It's not the screen itself that is the issue – it's the overuse of screen time. Parents/guardians should set healthy screen time limits and encourage children to engage in outdoor activities, sports, reading, and time with family members.

Good modelling by parents is also important. When adults are on the phone all day, kids can model the same behavior. Families can establish rules (e.g., no cell phones at dinner or at night). Children can also be taught in school healthy use of technology and the need to balance screen time with physical activity.

Finally, excessive screen time can have a detrimental impact on children's physical health, eyesight, sleep patterns, emotional health, learning capability, and social skills. Technology offers lots of benefits but children require a balance in their daily life. It is my belief that parents, teachers and society should collaborate in order to help children lead healthier lives. If a child can keep their screen time in check and do other more positive activities, then they can be healthier, happier and more successful in the future.
