However, bacterial infections, particularly Streptococcus pyogenes (strep throat) account for about 15-30% of cases. Tonsillitis spreads through respiratory droplets when someone infected coughs or sneezes.

Watch for sore throat, difficulty swallowing, swollen and red tonsils (sometimes with white or yellow patches), fever, tender lymph nodes in the neck, and bad breath. Young children may also experience stomach pain or excessive drooling.

Good hygiene is your best defense: wash hands frequently, avoid sharing utensils or drinks, stay away from people who are sick, and replace your toothbrush after you've been ill. Strengthening your immune system through adequate sleep, nutrition, and hydration also helps.

For viral tonsillitis, rest, fluids, warm salt water gargles, and over-the-counter pain relievers usually do the trick. Bacterial tonsillitis requires antibiotics, it's crucial to complete the full course even if you feel better. In cases of frequent recurrence (7+ episodes in a year), your doctor might recommend a tonsillectomy.

Seek medical attention if you have severe throat pain lasting more than 48 hours, difficulty breathing or swallowing, high fever, or if symptoms don't improve with home care.
