Let's do it...Do It Yourself👉Craft, Creativity, Drawing, origami, DIY, Recycling and more week91
Greetings to everyone, and it's good to be here once again. Today I’m excited to share my entry for New Contest Week 91. Let’s do it… Do It Yourself organized by @mesola, which is a pencil portrait of Angelina jolie. Art, for me, is more than placing lines on paper; it is a quiet conversation between my hands, my eyes, and my thoughts. I chose her as my subject because her face carries a strong presence—bold yet graceful—and I wanted to challenge myself to capture that balance using only a pencil. In this post, I will share a detailed and easy-to-follow tutorial of how I created this pencil portrait of Angelina Jolie. Stay tuned.
Materials used
For this portrait, I worked with basic drawing tools such as
• A4 paper
• graphite pencil
• mechanical pencil
• HB and 2B pencil
• 4B and 6B pencil
• charcoal pencil
• black pen
• eraser
• sharpener
Step 1
I began by drawing the eyes; I carefully shaped them and added details gradually—eyelids, pupils, eyelashes, and reflections. I used gentle shading to give depth without making the eyes look harsh. Then I added the nose and lips.
Step 2
After doing that, shading came next. Using a 2B pencil, I began shading the face slowly. I focused on light and shadow around the cheekbones, nose bridge, and jawline. I blended softly to keep the skin smooth and natural. Angelina Jolie’s facial features are strong yet elegant, so I avoided heavy outlines and relied more on tonal shading.
Step 3
Next was the hair. The hair was one of the most time-consuming parts of the portrait. Instead of drawing it as a single dark mass, I focused on individual strands and flow. I followed the natural direction of the hair, layering darker tones over lighter ones to create texture and movement.
Step 4
After that part was complete, I then completed the drawing by adding the shoulders and wrote my username name and shaded them as well.
Step 5
For the final touches, I cleaned up unnecessary lines with an eraser and deepened shadows where needed to improve contrast. I stepped back frequently to assess the overall balance of the portrait, and my drawing was now finally complete.
A selfie with my drawing
Creating realistic art doesn’t require expensive tools—just dedication and love for the process. I’m proud to share this tutorial as part of New Contest Week 91, and I hope it motivates others to explore drawing and creativity. Thank you for stopping by and supporting my handmade art.
