The essence of a marriage is to unite a man and a woman based on certain terms and conditions that are recognized as true. In general, the validity of a marriage depends on a place inhabited by a resident. This is the form of a rule that has been set by a community. Due to different places of residence, different rules and different ways of holding a marriage. From this, three types of marriages are formed.

1. Religious marriage.

Speaking of marriage according to religion is inseparable from the religion adopted by someone, where when they want to hold marriage there are several conditions that have been determined by their respective religions, this is not separated from the role of religious leaders. Like our country in Indonesia, there are some religions recognized by the state so that from the form of religious marriage type is also born several forms of marriage. Among other things :
  • Islamic.
Islam has set the procedures for its implementation through the Qur'an, Hadith. and the Ulema Agreement. In Islam there are conditions or elements that must be completed during the wedding procession so that the marriage is valid and obtains a marriage certificate from the office of religious affairs. These elements are: the existence of a prospective husband and wife, ijab kabul (handover), a guardian from the female side. and witnesses.

Marriage is not just talking about the relationship between a man and a woman that is legally recognized by religion and state law, and not only talking about the biological needs of men and women, but marriage in Islam is closely related to living conditions. the human soul, spirituality, outward and inner human values, and the existence of a truth. Not only that. Marriage in an Islamic perspective is an obligation that must be followed which is a form of faith and devotion to the Creator.

  • Christian.
The legal basis for Christian marriage is based on the Bible where they believe that spiritual union in the form of marriage will gain added value if it takes place in a church after fulfilling the applicable requirements. Marriage is something sacred because they believe in God who binds husband and wife as well.
In the Christian wedding procession there are terms marriage blessings, songs of praise, sacred promises.

  • Buddha
Buddhism is also a recognized religion in Indonesia. Here they also have a procedure to obtain the validity of a marriage by means of a prospective husband and wife contacting the temple administrator to get instructions for guidance, direction and marriage procedures.
In the process there are several terms. some of them, votive readings, tribute to the Tri Ratna, installation of rings, ribbons and yellow cloth. commendation offering.

2. Traditional Marriage

Customary marriage is a form of marriage based on the customary rules of an area inhabited by upholding the cultural values of the ancestral heritage.

For indigenous peoples, marriage is a very important event, this is because they consider there is a relationship involving the families of the bride and groom. Also included in customary law, marriage does not only concern people who are still alive, but also involves the spirits and ancestors of both parties of the bride and groom.

3. Marriage in the form of a state

In our country the registration of marriage is one of the principles of national marriage law. the existence of the principle of registration of marriages is related to and determines a marriage. This implies that in addition to following the provisions of each religion or belief, it is also a condition for the validity of the marriage.

I need to explain, marriage in the form of religion and customs in Indonesia cannot be separated from marriage in the form of a state. This means that every type of marriage must be registered with the authorized office

There are several countries that have legalized and regulated interfaith marriage by submitting an application to the court. The application for permission to continue the marriage is submitted by the prospective husband and wife. This kind of marriage applies only by state law. there are also those who call this marriage a court marriage because it must obtain court permission from a country.
