"Welcome!"

What does 'welcome' mean to you and what do you use it for? Mention 3 instances.

The word welcome is a very versatile word with many meaning depending on usage. It can be used as a verb, a noun or as an adjective.

As we arived at the airport, we were welcomed by a small group of locals.
The welcome used here is a verb that describes the action of the small group of people who received us at the airport, they were friendly and hospitable, happy to see us.

The welcome was warm and inviting.
The welcome in this case is a noun referring to the feeling of being accepted by the host.

The welcome sign they were holding were colourful and eye-catching,
In this case welcome is an adjective that provides more information about the sign held by this small group of people.

I use it to indicate acceptance. A good example is when I help someone and they say thank you. I will respond by saying "you are welcome"
The welcome in this case is a kind of social nicety that shows that I have accepted the gratitude they just expressed. Often used to maintain good social relationship.

I also use it to tell a visitor to feel comfortable. A good example is when I open the door, with a smile and say, "you are welcome". In this case, I am practically say, "make yourself comfortable" while at a higher level I will say like the French would say "feel at home" or "make yourself at home."
The main idea here is to ask the visitors to relax.

I use the word welcome as an adjective like in the statement: "...the return of SBD was a welcome development." The welcome here is showing that it was a good thing that SBD came back.

And finally, this one I think is specific to Nigeria. In Some kind of mork-humility and sarcastic way, we use welcome when we are pissed off or insulted.
An example is when you are called a coconut head and you reply with the words "you are welcome".

How do you feel when this word is used for you and how do you also think the person you use it for feels about it.

When welcome is used positively, it is very soothing. When I sense that the word is used in sincerity, it is reassuring and affirming. Making me feel appreciated and that the appreciation for the kind act I just expressed is acknowledge.
In the case where I am the visitor, I fill my present is not resented, that my host is happy to have me around.

I believe when I say "you are welcome" to others, they equally feel comfortable or appreciated.

But anyone who gets the sarcastic version of you are welcome will definitely feel hurt at heart.

Why should you use this word more often and why is it important to teach our kids to use it

It is very polite to use it when acknowledging someones appreciation and helps build strong social relationship between people.
When receiving a visitor, it really sets the visitors mode, creating grounds for relaxed interactions in a friendly atmosphere.
It is important to teach kids how to show hospitality using words like welcome. It makes them more accommodating

As you welcome 2024, what are your expectations and how do you intend to achieve them?

I wish the year 2024 will be as accommodating as 2023 with as little regrets and as many accomplishments, may it be a year I will be comfortable reliving it over again.
To accomplish this, I wish to carefully examine my decision and choice. Set proper priorities, have a purpose and a number of plans and counter plans coupled with a pinch of positive coincidence and Devine intervention it all takes shape.

Conclusion

Hello @manuelhooks, as you express the word welcome can be expressed in different ways, but with the same purpose which is to feel good.

When we receive visitors or when we visit some place, it is nice when we receive or welcome, because the atmosphere is cozy, trust and even joys.

We must instill in the little ones of the house, so that they create the habit of welcoming.

Greetings and blessings.

Thank you for gracing my post with such a beautiful comment. well crafted comments like this are welcome at anytime. Now I will have to look for your entry so as to see your analysis of this very hospitable word which I agree we should teach our kids and make them use it often.
