The homework Irony

Who is schooling?

Last week was a midterm break for my kids, and as usual, it always comes with a midterm project, some kind of high powered homework on steroids. This time it was the Art teachers' turn, launching in a paper collage on any insect of your choice.

It took a lot to scale through the project but as if that was not enough, yesterday was tints and shades, a battle of brushes and colours in water.
I had to go online, attend some crash courses on YouTube to attend to the assignment.

The real question is, who is the student here?

Who else is feeling like they are the ones going back to school with all these homework tasks?

During a parent-teacher meeting, a parent said her task is to get the fees and pay, that teachers should do the teaching at school and stop passing it home to her. In responce a school representative said the education of her kid is a joint effort between the school and home. And homeworks are the parents' share in the deal.

Another parent objected that he is not literate. He wants the child to be educated, so why send home tasks he hardly understands? Adding that the English teacher is teaching English because that is what they learn in school. How do you expect him to solve French homework when he is a simple carpenter?

When in response the school said the kids are able to navigate their homework task, other parents objected that their hearts often skip when their kids mention homework because it's not easy for everyone.

Just of recent, my kid came home, she said she wanted to see a hard disk and floppy diskette. Though it was easy for me, I flipped over our HP EliteBook, opened the HDD panel with a screwdriver and removed the hard disk for her to see.
Floppy diskettes were long extinct, an old relic, it's almost like looking for a life dinosaur. But not all homes have screwdrivers and if they do, not all parents have worked with computer hardware and have the confidence and the know-how to pull that off.

For all their efforts, I personally think parents should also be given an assessment at the end of the term. I believe some parents will be promoted depending on their efforts in caring for these homework tasks while some will repeat the class. A kid's success or failure is not always a true reflection of the parents' effort or input, though sometimes it is.

Imagine a parent shouting at the kid because of poor grading and the kid is frantically trying to point out that they did well but were affected by the low score they got in the homework and parent participation section.

Conclusion and Invitation

Are these homeworks ment to educate the parents? Or are they some kind of psychological way of telling the kids that their parents are in agreement with the school when it comes to their education, and are complementing classroom learning?

I am inviting @nella19, @rubee2as1, @jerardid20 @onyii03, @emerson-25, @axgustine, @lauren0802, @goodnews2020 and @mayjay to contribute and have a say on this topic.
