As a student midwife, I often see expectant mothers struggling with gestational diabetes. Managing it properly is crucial for both mother and baby. Before I proceed, I will talk briefly on the definition of gestational diabetes.

What is Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)?

This is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy in a woman who did not have diabetes before. It means that during pregnancy, the mother's blood sugar (glucose) becomes higher than normal. Why it happens is because during pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones that help the baby grow. Some of these hormones will block the action of insulin, causing insulin resistance in the body. So even if the mother produces insulin, her body cannot use it properly.

Here are 5 lifesaving tips every mom-to-be should know to prevent gestational diabetes:

  • Monitor Your Blood Sugar Regularly: Checking your blood sugar helps you stay in control and prevents complications like large babies (macrosomia) and neonatal hypoglycemia.

  • Eat Balanced Meals: Focus on whole grains, vegetables, and lean proteins, and avoid sugary foods. Small, frequent meals help keep blood sugar stable.

  • Stay Active Safely: Light exercise like walking improves glucose control.

  • Attend all prenatal and antenatal appointments: Regular check ups help detect complications early, including high blood pressure or issues with fetal (baby) growth.

  • Educate Yourself & Your Support System: Understanding gestational diabetes and having family support makes management easier and reduces stress.

Remember: Managing gestational diabetes protects both mother and baby.

Wow this is so insightful never knew such could happen during pregnancy. Please whats the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the pancreas produces little to no insulin and therefore require insulin therapy this typically develops in childhood.

Type 2 diabetes is an Insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion, often linked to lifestyle factors like obesity. Pancreas may still produce insulin, but not enough and it can be managed through lifestyle changes, oral meds, or insulin treatment.

Hmmm just sad what we consume affects our health. my mum is type2 and she complains a lot about how her legs are so stiff sometimes, i cant really explain it and it pains her a lot but I keep telling her she need to walk around with it because if you don’t exercise i, it will get even worst, one good thing is she’s very active with chores. And I introduced her to intermittent fasting although her BMI is intact she isn’t overweight.but she’s on medication everyday hmm.

Don't worry your mum will be fine just advice her not to do strenuous chores or work that will make her injure herself because if she is wounded that wound will spread over that area and become gangrenous if medical intervention is not given early.

Also advise her to take lots of vegetables in her meals and avoid too much sugary or salty meals but she can take it in a little quantity if she wish. Encourage your mum to visits her doctor regularly, not once in a while because this will go along way to improve her health and wellness. My regards to your mum.

Thanks so much for this health tips i will take this to her Have a blessed evening dear 🫶🏻
