Interpersonal relationship refers to the communication and bond amongst guidance, caregivers, and communities, and other healthcare personnel. This is essential to providing multidisciplinary patient-centered care. It helps nurses and patients have a good and perfect relationship.
Some of the elements of interpersonal relationships include:
- Communication skills: This involves having a good way of conveying information effectively so as to understand each other.
- Setting boundaries: This is about knowing what's okay and what's not okay in a relationship. It's about giving each other space, understanding their emotions, and having an endpoint.
- Trust: This is the bedrock of every powerful relationship. It's built on competence, reliability, integrity, and openness. When trust is found, a relationship becomes safe.
- Respect: This is about esteeming and putting others' feelings into consideration before doing something.
There are also stages in interpersonal relationships:
- Orientation stage: This is the stage where you meet the patient.
- Working stage: This is where you have a good work relationship with your patient.
- Termination stage: This is where you end the relationship.
Types of interpersonal relationships include:
- Relationship between nurses and patients
- Relationship between nurses and caretakers
- Relationship between guidance and nurses
- Relationship between nurses and healthcare personnel
Advantages of interpersonal relationships:
- It enhances effectiveness.
- It reduces anxiety and fear.
- It improves professional growth.
- It improves work-care harmony.
- It also helps in human development.
