When Someone Treats You Like an Option

Sometimes the deepest insult in life is not loud words or open disrespect. Sometimes it is something very quiet. It is when someone treats you like an option instead of a priority.
I remember a small moment from my own life that made me understand this feeling. A few years ago, I had a friend. Whenever he needed help, he would call me quickly. If he had a problem, he would message me again and again until I replied. But when I needed to talk or needed help, suddenly he became very busy. Hours passed… sometimes even a whole day. At first, I ignored it. I told myself maybe he is busy, maybe I am thinking too much.
But slowly I realized something. For him, I was not a priority. I was just a convenient option.
This realization was not easy. Many of us experience the same thing in life. It can happen in friendship, in family relations, and even in social circles. Some people remember us only when they need something. When their work is done, they disappear again.
For a long time I kept asking myself, “Maybe I should try harder to keep this friendship alive.” But one day I understood a simple truth. A relationship should not feel like a constant struggle where only one person is trying.
Respect and value should be natural.
If someone really values you, they will not keep you waiting all the time. They will not make you feel like you are standing in a long line, hoping your turn will come someday. People who care about you make space for you in their lives without excuses.
I have also seen this in small daily situations. For example, when someone promises to meet but keeps canceling again and again because “something more important came up.” At first it sounds normal. But when it happens repeatedly, you begin to understand the message hidden behind the excuses.
The message is simple: You are not important enough.
Learning this truth can hurt. But strangely, it can also make you stronger. When you understand your own worth, you stop chasing attention from people who do not respect your time or feelings.
These days, I try to remember one thing. Real relationships are not complicated. They do not make you feel small. They do not make you question your value again and again.
The people who truly respect you will never treat you like a backup plan.
Life is already full of challenges. We should not spend our energy proving our value to people who refuse to see it. Sometimes the best decision is simply to step back quietly and invest our time in people who treat us with honesty and respect.
Because at the end of the day, everyone deserves to be someone's priority… not someone's option.
