X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter

X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter was the third in the series of X-Wing Games that included X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance. There were various expansions and special editions released over the years but these were the main games and they are among some of my favorites. X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter was the third game in the series and was released for Windows in 1997. I always had a blast with these games.

Like the previous games in the series, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter allowed you to pilot various Star Wars ships in various missions. The great thing about these games was that they were not just shooters on rails. You had a large open area to fly around in. In addition, there were also more simulator like qualities vs. simply being an arcade shooter. You had control over where to divert power and the flight controls felt more sim like. While X-Wing centered around flying Rebel ships and Tie Fighter around imperial ships, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter included campaigns from both sides. It included some significant improvements, including higher resolution graphics and other graphical improvements as well as improved multiplayer among other things.

Not everything was perfect though, for whatever reason it was decided not to build a significant single player experience. While the missions could all be played single-player, there was really no story line to tie things together. This was corrected in part with the release of the expansion Balance of Power. In any case, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, as well as all the other X-Wing games are must play games if you are a fan of Star Wars.

Not everybody quite agreed that this was a spectacular game. While, for example, Edge magazine gave X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter a 90 out of 100 score which seems perfectly reasonable to me, Next Generation only gave it 3 out of 5 stars. I can only conclude that they hate Star Wars.

Sadly, while there would be one more game in the X-Wing series and it was perhaps the best, the series would die after that. I don't really understand why as this series was easily the best of the Star Wars games and there is a terrific opportunity to create more missions, missions and ships from different eras, etc. Apparently, there was a remake of X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter with high definition graphics and other improvements planned in the 2009 time frame that was quite far along before it was cancelled for some unknown reason. I can only conclude that they hate Star Wars.

I have heard that Star Wars: Squadrons does bring back some of the X-Wing magic. I do not have it and haven't played it but I would definitely be curious to hear the opinions of those who loved the original X-Wing series and have also played Squadrons.

All four of the X-Wing games are available on gog.com and I've just about talked my self into spending $40 to buy them all again (even though I'm sure I have the originals around here somewhere) including special editions and all expansions.
