My Played Video Games Review: Cybernator for the Super Nintendo

Cybernator (known in Japan as Assault Suits Valken), is a 2D mecha action game developed by Japanese video game developers Masaya and released in 1992 for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom. It is a prequel to the first game, Target Earth on the Sega Genesis, which I posted a review of before.

I am a sucker for Japanese-style mechs. They are more aesthetically pleasing than Western-style mech designs. And this game made me want to quench that thirst even more.

The Story

It is the year 2065 AD. The nations of Earth have once again split into two rival powers. The enemy Axis forces have constructed a moon base capable of launching titanic space battle cruisers. Your mission is to take command of the Federation Cybernator robot and destroy them.

The Graphics and Sound

Beautiful graphics and each level have its own personal feel. There are very detailed enemies and levels, and the pixels in-game are barely noticeable. What I like are both the explosions and the anime-like cutscenes. Even though the anime cutscenes have only moving mouths, they are very well drawn. And there are many explosions in this game. From destroying a small robot to destroying entire enemy bases, the explosions look great.

The sounds fit here. Your robot makes metal banging on metal sorts of sounds when it moves, booster sounds, gunfire, laser fire, and especially explosive sounds. The music fits well too, from dangerous area music to action music. What I didn't like was that the music wasn't real music, just some cheap sounds likely put together. For example, the "dangerous area music" sounded more like humming than a true, catchy, great track.

The Gameplay

You pilot a large mech through seven unique stages. Ranging from a space colony to underground mines. All of the stages seem different from each other.

Your mech begins equipped with a machine gun and punch attack. The punch is kind of useless though, having a small range and weak power. You can get to power up your weapons, giving them more power, range, and abilities. Eventually, you will get other weapons, including missiles, a laser, and a few others.

The actual gameplay ranges from easy, to frustrating. The big downside to dying is that when you continue, your weapons are all back to default. Now, if you are near the end of the stage or at a boss, this makes the fights much more difficult. There are a few parts where you can die easily with a limited number of continues.

Your mech moves rather slowly, though it has a dash function. It also has limited hover capabilities. In some stages, you will be forced to fly forward while using a jet propulsion attachment. In other space area stages, you'll be able to fly around freely. Weapon switching can be done at a push of a button, however, it tends to scroll through too quickly. Aiming is a bit of a chore, to slowly move your weapon at an angle to hit your enemy. Still, it is great fun to just sit back and blast everything that moves.

The replay value is mediocre. You only need to beat the game twice. Once for each good and bad ending. There are no secrets to speak of. You can fail certain missions to change the story a bit and get the bad ending.

My Verdict

Though having a small replay value and a somewhat short length, Cybernator is an action-packed game that will have you hooked the whole way through.

Play it on the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a good emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
