Firepower 2000 is a top-down shoot 'em-up developed by SCi Games (British video game publisher) and published by Sunsoft. It was released for the Super Super Nintendo/Super Famicom in 1992.

This was a fun vehicle shooter to play back in the day with its 2 player cooperative mode. Players can control either a combat helicopter or a wheeled tank. The helicopter is not stopped by land obstacles but the tank can fire in any direction.

The game was known as Super SWIV in other parts of the world. (Image source)

The Story

What if all the secret weapons in the world fell into the wrong hands? And you are under hostage? You've got to take the wheel of a jumping, wheeling, gun-heavy tank that fires in any direction. Or master the controls of a deadly, combat helicopter. There's no time to reinforce -- it's just you or you and a partner going straight into the blazing, blasting heart of the enemy territory. Make sure you buckle up. And start blasting!

The Graphics and Sound

For being a Super Nintendo game, it is okay. There are detailed sprites and very good backgrounds. There are some cutscenes that are just pretty good pictures. The levels are different and filled with details like a volcano, dry plain, or a river for example.

The best way to describe the sound effects is that they not that very good but loud enough. And the music is pretty decent sometimes.

The Gameplay

In Firepower 2000, you can choose to play alone or with a friend, controlling one of two vehicles to shoot at everything in sight. The gameplay remains interesting because the two vehicles handle differently, so the vehicle you choose affects your gameplay style. Each stage has challenges for both vehicles to complete. The helicopter is good at fending off enemy air attacks, while the jeep is effective at taking out ground units and jumping over gaps. This teamwork aspect makes Firepower 2000 more enjoyable to play with a friend rather than tackling all six stages solo.

The controls in the game are easy to use and feel smooth and responsive. They allow you to fully control your vehicle and quickly access special weapons. The controls are straightforward, which helps keep the game enjoyable. They contribute to the overall feeling that the game is fun and easy to play.

This game can be challenging due to the large number of enemy units and bullets that are often displayed on the screen at the same time. Additionally, the bosses at the end of each stage can be difficult to defeat. Overall, the game tends to have a high level of difficulty.

Replay value is good if you got a 2nd player friend to enjoy its cooperative play.

My Verdict

Firepower 2000 is a fun, fast-paced game that is a great way to pass the time with a friend when you're looking for some retro-gaming to do. If you come across it, it's worth collecting. However, some people may feel that the game could have been longer, with at least two more stages.

Play it on the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a decent emulator. Play it coop with a friend.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
