Super Mario Kart is a cartoony racing video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom. It was released in Japan and USA in 1992. Europe got it in 1993.

I had to play this one because kids love it during its time during the early 1990s. It is just Go-cart racing with characters from the Mario series added with funny features.

The Story

The Super Mario GoKart Park is open for racing fun! Hit the tracks with Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Princess Toadstool. Get tough with Donkey Kong, Jr. and Bowser. Even Toad and Koopa Troopa will race for an all-out quest for the Gold Cup! Go head-to-head with a friend or challenge the computer in split-screen, Mode 7 graphics goodness.

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics look very basic compared to video games nowadays but are quite good for their time. It has colorful tracks that can easily be distinguished from each other. The only flaw in the graphics is that some of the items that the karts can not drive over look completely flat. It can make things sometimes a bit confusing.

The music is very good. It still has a tune or two that really catches your ears. Really nice tunes are represented in most of the race tracks. The sound was also presented well. The sound of karts zooming around the tracks is enjoyable. Other than the zooming of the race karts, all of the other sounds are alright.

The Gameplay

In Super Mario Kart, the good part about this game is the choices. You choose your own mode, character, etc. With a lot of choices, you will make it easy on yourself when trying this game out for the first time.

The racers are all different. Some are heavy, while some are fast.

The track selection is fine. It can have a few tight turns where your chosen character can't go through easily here and there. But there's no track that is very annoying to play through.

But the only bad thing about this is the loose controls. Even in easy mode, it is hard to earn perfect in this game.

The replay value is good because of the great gameplay! The tracks in the Grand Prix are so good, you can replay them by yourself for as long as you like.

There's also a multiplayer option. It's great, but it can get frustrating identifying which player is which at times. Other than that, this is perfect.

My Verdict

Super Mario Kart is certainly a solid racing game. It is a great one for cooperative play or if you are just looking for some good casual racing fun with few twists added to it. The good points really outshine the flaws.

Play it on the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on an emulator. Play it with a friend.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
