My Played Video Games Review: Super Star Wars for the Super Nintendo

Super Star Wars is a 1992 action video game developed by LucasArts and Sculptured Software for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom. It is based on the popular 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. JVC Musical Industries published it in Japan in 1992 and Europe got it in 1993.

I was a Star Wars movie fan so I was glad that it got the Super Nintendo treatment during the early 1990s.

The Story

Join young Luke, brash Han Solo, and the mighty Chewbacca in their rebel war against the evil Galactic Empire. Battle fierce aliens. Pilot 2 vehicles in high-speed, first-person, 3-D sequences. Fight your way through the deserts of Tatooine to the dusty streets of Mos Eisley and beyond. So grab your laser blaster, switch on your lightsaber, and take on the fight for galactic freedom.

The Graphics and Sound

Graphics are pretty good for a SNES game. The character models are detailed and nicely animated sprites, along with the enemies. The Mode 7 graphics featured levels are what you would expect from the SNES, no more, no less. And the cutscenes almost look like scaled-down screenshots from the movie.

The music is almost like the movie as the SNES hardware will allow. There's also some voice work being done, and for an old cartridge-based system, it sounds pretty good. You will definitely recognize some classic lines from the movie. The sound effects are great too. Some of the sounds are strange, but nonetheless fun. There is nothing soundwise that degrades this game at all.

The Gameplay

You play as either Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, or Chewbacca on many levels. You have a laser blaster that can be upgraded and you shoot anything that can be destroyed. After a certain level, Luke can use a lightsaber and a blaster, but not at the same time.

You cannot save your game, nor are there any passwords for the levels. Meaning, you have to sit down and play from beginning to end. Run out of continues? Then it's GAME OVER!

However, a few levels are different. In two levels, you are in Luke's land speeder and you have to blast away Jawas, and then the level is over. In two levels, you fly an X-Wing fighter. In the first, you fly over the Death Star, destroying TIE fighters and laser cannon Towers. In the other last level of the game, you fly down the Death Star trench in a cockpit view like in the movie.

The replay value is mediocre. Once you get good at this game after practicing and trying to beat it (which may take quite a while), there isn't much more to do. The game is challenging in that it doesn't give you limitless continues.

My Verdict

Super Star Wars is a game worth playing for both fans of the Star Wars franchise and side-scrolling action fans in general. Its faced-paced combat and stages make for an exciting time, while its hard challenge will make you want to master each stage repeatedly. Plus, the variety in the stages it offers helps keep it from getting boring.

Play it on the beloved Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a nice emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
