The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is an action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo of Japan for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom Entertainment System. It is the 3rd game in The Legend of Zelda series (1 and 2 on the NES) and was released in 1991 in Japan and 1992 in North America and Europe.

This is arguably the best action-adventure game on 16-bit systems. It is so damn good that I sometimes go back to playing it for the nostalgia and the music.

The Story

Venture into Hyrule in an age of magic and heroes. A power-hungry magician takes over the kingdom. Only you can prevent him from ruining the land of Hyrule. In your quest, you'll venture into mazes, dungeons, castles, and mysterious forests. Test your might with magical weapons. Learn the crazy spells, locate magical items and solve the mysteries of that evil magician and the other hidden, shadow realm of Hyrule.

The Graphics and Sound

The graphics of this game are beautiful. The world of Hyrule is lush and mysterious at the same time. Areas of the countryside like the Haunted Forest and Zora's Falls look great. Your character is much more detailed and his animations are plenty. He can dash, fight, spin, and swim easily. The enemies are also nicely detailed, and the bosses look damn good.

The music in this game is excellent. The overworld tunes and the dungeon scores are ear-pleasing and memorable. They fit the fantasy theme of the game well. The sound effects, such as the sword-slashing, swimming sounds, and even the chickens are spot on. Even the clinking noise that the game makes whenever you collect the coins makes this an immersive game.

The Gameplay

This game’s gameplay is awesome. The world of Hyrule is very large, making you want to explore every square inch of it. There are forests, mountains, castles, and lakes that you must explore to complete your quest. There is only one town village in Hyrule, and a bunch of houses scattered across the land.

There are 8 dungeons, most of which are not hard to explore. For most dungeons, you must find the treasure (a weapon) and use that to complete a previously unpassable part of the dungeon. In the end, you face a boss, which is usually defeated with that weapon.

Controls are smooth and easy. The item selection screens are easy to use, and even in heated battles, you can never curse the game for your hero making a wrong move.

The replay value is great. After you beat the game, there are many other things you can do such as collect all the items or secrets you may have missed.

My Verdict

This is a great action-adventure game and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past really deserves to be on your must-play list. If there is only one 16-bit game you can play, no matter which system you game on, this is it.

Play it on the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom or play it on a trusty emulator.

Let's keep on gaming in the free world!
