Animals Photography (20) - Meet our pets
I grew up surrounded by animals
Having a dog was pretty much standard. We always had two at home to keep each other company. Our dogs were mainly outside and did only enter the kitchen and so did I as a child. The kitchen was where we sat and ate. We didn't have any begging dogs and when I let them out, children living in my street liked to walk along. The dogs were not aggressive and my mother preferred to have them on her lap rather than me, while I preferred to sit in the basket with the dog.
Besides dogs, there was also a large aquarium, there were hamsters, rabbits and turtles.
I have always had dogs and... cats
since I am an adult. The fact I'm allergic to cats did not stop me from keeping them.
For years I kept aquariums and for almost two decades I kept ferrets, skunks and owls. In addition to my two jobs I did run an animal shelter and worked as a volunteer in a private zoo where I came in touch with all kinds of animal species. I loved being among the animals where no one dared to enter the gate, enclosures that had therefore not been cleaned moderately or for a long time.
Working with problematic animals was challenging and way more satisfying than working with people in need. An animal may act aggressive, but I have learned that this is almost out of fear and that humans are the main reason.
People and animals are not a good combination if the animal cannot be a beast.
Am I a true animal lover?
I don't think so. There are plenty of species that I have no interest in keeping them. To me the most interesting are the predators. I have no problem feeding mice, chickens or other animals alive. If you believe predators can live on lettuce and carrots you should switch to a herbivore.
Commercial animal feed is of poor quality. You can already see that in the stool. The famous 'cow pie' (poop) is a good example. What we face is the faeces of an animal with diarrhoea, poorly digested food that a dog with nutrient deficiency will eat happily.
The average dog and cat food is no exception and it gets worse every year. Cats are 100% predators and therefore do not naturally eat carrots, grains and spinach. The more an animal eats and poops, the poorer the quality of the feed. If you want to give vegetables, fruit, grains and leftovers to your dog or cat, it will be cheaper if you let them eat what you eat. This way the food scraps are not wasted and the cat/dog will be healthier without the high amount of fiber, which I'm starting to think is ground hay, and the high concentration of raw ash. If this meal of leftoverd is supplemented with a raw egg, some fish, fish oil, raw meat and bones 1-2 times a week, it will provide everything the body needs.
BARF is the way to avoid all those health issues pets suffer from.
My Czech wolfhounds** search for mulberries in the garden and love the walnuts that fall from the tree. I am not afraid it will kill them nor will the snakes, rats or hedgehoges they kill and eat. Looking for walnuts among the autumn leaves is one of the best entertainments there is.
Baldr
The Czech Wolfdog is a strong breed
and way healthier than the German Shepherd, which is known to be susceptible to more than 500 diseases! That is of course the consequence of what humans have caused by breeding these dogs and what many purebred dogs suffer from. Mother Nature would never breed defects en masse and attach a name and a hefty price tag to it.
Because my dogs are watchdogs, I chose this breed. A pleasant side effect is that they bark hardly or are even unable to do so. They do howl like the wolves which they do at specific hours of the day, no full moon is needed for these crying wolves if they communicate.
Stick
There is a dachshund
He is super dominant and of course, he doesn't know that he is small in stature. He's extremely jealous! None of the wolfhounds are allowed to have fun because if he acts like crazy. Lying around in the grass, digging or enjoying a bone often causes Stick to bark deafeningly. The wolves usually ignore him so he is not punished for his annoying behavior by them. Stick is a bully and also one who was difficult to potty train. A characteristic of the dachshund which is probably also the result of its stubbornness or laziness. He has no problem soiling his own nest (cushion) and calmly pees on it if he refuses to go outside.
Stick has a lot in common with the husband of a friend's daughter.
He wets the bed too because he's too lazy to visit the bathroom and worst of all he's proud of that.
Apart from Stick's typical behaviour and tyranny, he is a sweet and cheerful dog, a hunting dog that is. He has the time of his life when he wanders around outside and he doesn't need to obey anyone since there is a lot to smell and experience in nature.
His bone collection grows by the day. This small dog is a collector. He likes retrieving, unlike the wolfhounds. At most, they catch a bone, egg or chicken and even that is quite a challenge for them. It's fine with me there's no reason to model them into something they are not. They are animals and each of them is special in their own way. They keep me, and my family, safe which is what we need.
Kazimir
Poppy
We have cats
Kazimir is my son's and although I spent the most time with him he likes his boss above anyone else. I am 'loved' if it comes to food and he only begs me for it but he like me to touch him. So if my son tells the cat to say hi to me he looks annoyed and all I do is holding my index finger in front of his face. If the fat King finds me worthy he touches it with his nose.
The other cat Poppy, a female, spends most of her days and nights outside after all we do need someone to hunt for mice, preferably rats and the pigeons. If she caught something little dominant Stick takes it away from her. He isn't a picky eater and loves to roll over dead animals which is a smelly habit.
Kevin is another member of our family
It's my daughter's snake and not only a beauty (not poison but has the gift of eating poisoned snakes without getting sick or dying from it) but very curious. We removed the light because it tried to climb on it and would burn itself. From day number one on it studied how to break out and to open the door of the terrarium. Kevin always wakes up from its hibernation if I arrive.
This snake has always been a difficult eater, hardly ate anything and ignored the offered food for weeks if not months, which makes it definitely the cheapest member of this family if it comes to the costs of living, but did make us worry a lot.
By now Kevin is at least 1.20 meters if not taller and has never been ill. A warm bath is the best treat and if not available the water bowl is an accepted substitute.

The best thing about living with animals
is observing them. I did so for the biggest part of my life while running a shelter and working at the zoo. It's the only way to understand why an animal behaves the way it does and to find a solution to a (behavioural) problem.
If the present dogs (5) die I won't replace them. I am getting older and if I am not around someone else has to take care of them. That won't be easy unless it is one of my youngest two children but like my son always says: They all listen better to you than me, you are the leader of the pack.
No, I wouldn't advise anyone to take those dogs but if not more than one or too at most. A wolfhound is different from an ordinary dog, harder to train, very energetic and enthusiastic and not fond of learning tricks. They easily climb walls over 2 meters high or jump on the roof or of a balcony 3 floors high. Using their teeth for everything is normal and they are not aware of how strong they are.
My dogs are strong, healthy, full of life which shows and it's amazing to see how happy they are if I show my face. Another plus is they find joy in the small things in life which has a positive effect on me.
We humans are part of the animal world and could learn a lot from the animals we keep if we would only take the time to observe and understand those we are surrounding ourselves with.

Wow, now you really have pets. I didn't know many of them. I'm so glad you and your kids share with those pets.
Thanks for inviting me.
I wish you success.
Thank you dear. I hope you join too.
I will, thank you.
Wow! I'm absolutely amaze on your experience regarding animals. More important is the knowledge you have achieved. Nowadays way of people feeding and growing pets (mostly dogs and cats) is causing disease and some lazyness. It's important to respect their nature.
All your animals are very very cute and pretty, you know them and describe each one of them. A snake feeding from other snakes it's new to me, but very good for you.
Thank you for the invitation, I'll make sure to show your photos to my daughter, I can tell you she will love them too.
Blessings
Because of the animal shelter I studied for vet's assistant. I know it's not posdible for everyone to do so but it saved me a lot of money.
If you keep a certain animal you should educate yourself which everyone can.
Kevin doesn't eat snakes it's mice or one day old chickens.
Your daughter is an animal lover?
Thank you for commenting?
