Cook's set: "Apron and hat" || The 3R-S30W4

It's another week to be diligent, to learn new things, to make mistakes and recover from the mistakes made. That's it. I've not sewn a chef's cap before, but I've sewn an apron, and this reminded me of when I did that in my childhood days. We would do it for our home economics practicals. So this has presented itself again to me. How was I able to achieve this as an upcoming chef? You know I cook? If you don't, know now.

Materials used
  • A piece of white fabric and an old piece of grey-coloured fabric
  • Paper gum or gum stay
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron and pen
  • A cloth ruler
  • Measuring tape
1001972944.jpg1001972942.jpg

These are the materials I used to sew this apron and hat. I didn't want to complete it in 2 days. So I had to stay up late in order to complete this, so I can use the next day to create the content. You may see some strange materials here, but trust me, I had to recycle them because, if you notice, the paper is dirty and squeezed. I had to bring it out, recycle and reuse. Same with the coloured fabric and white piece of material which my dad had in his shop as a spare.

Uses of the materials
Sewing MachineEven if the process isn't that tedious, you can't survive without a sewing machine unless you're an expert in hand sewing, but you won't be fast.
Measuring TapeThis is used for measuring the length and width of the fabrics we cut. I used it to measure the length and width of the gumstay and fabrics so it would not go out of shape without being imbalanced, especially with the pockets. This is very important when sewing this for commercial purposes.
Clothes rulerThese are used for marking the points on our measuring tape to serve as an indication that it's the length and width we want to draft. I used it mostly on gumstay and white fabric.
ScissorsThese are used to cut the fabric from its markings, trim it, and make it look straight, removing loose ends. I also used it to cut gumstay after being marked for sewing.
IronThis was used by me to straighten the fabric and put the gumstay together with the fabric for longevity.
Gumstay and penThe pen is used to mark measurements and draw lines with a ruler which would be cut out by scissors. The gumstay acts as my cardboard. I didn't want to use a cardboard because my cap would have to enter water, and if it's in cardboard, it would definitely melt.
Steps on how to make this apron and hat
  • I actually started with the most difficult, which is the hat. The hat gave me a tough time trying to make it look like that long, straight chef cap. That's what I was targeting, but I didn't turn out to be so. I had to manage the outcome since it still came out as a chef cap. I got my fabrics first. Using gumstay was because I would want to wash the hat, as it had some stains on it, as cardboard wouldn't be able to fit into this because of its nature.
  • I used my pen and tape to measure and mark it before cutting. I wanted the front piece of the cap, the fitting of my head, to be outstanding; that's why it would be plain. And do you know what? Before I even measured the gumstay, I measured my head sizes to know what I'm cutting. This is very important. After measuring my head size, I used the measurement to implement it on the Gumstay and then used the same measurement on the white fabric.

1001972966.jpg1001972968.jpg
  • I used my ruler to rule out the bad part and cut it out with my scissors. I then used my hot iron to weld them together so it becomes hard. I then focused on making the joining of the hat that looks like zigzags. I used that old method of making a hand fan to make the zigzag or steps design on the material and then ironed it to show the lines very well, as you can see. It's very visible. This design was made with a gumstay and piece of white fabric with a particular measurement. This is the end result.

1001973018.jpg1001973019.jpg
  • After everything was done, I sewed the top piece and the front down piece together and then created a bias to make the cap area so prominent in a way it would stand. I then put the cap covering on after joining them together, and my cap was super ready.

  • My apron was easy-going. I made sure the length of the apron was long enough to reach my knees. After that, I covered the loose ends by sewing it together without using a bias. I actually wanted to add a bias, but I was running out of time to do that. I had to sew it like that. I also cut and joined the next with a rope and the waist holder with ropes that tightened it from behind.

  • My using white on white was to signify the chef's tradition, and I then measured my pockets with the grey-coloured fabric and sewed it together with the apron, which was the last thing I did. After that, my apron was super ready.

Since it was dark, I could get a clear picture. I had to visit the supermarket of my friend to take this picture and funny video shown below.

Questions
  • Is recycling important to you? Recycling is very important to me because it helps me see that I can make something out of something useless. Just imagine the abandoned gumstay and wasted grey fabric. It's what I used in making my apron. That's the beauty of tailoring. We create garments and turn materials into finished products. Just imagine recycling all the waste in my dad's shop; the need for burning, which enhances smoke pollution, or dumping by the streets won't be there.
  • Do you actually use the craft you make for this challenge? I'm about to use this apron to prepare a dish, and I used it to showcase that it can be used in the kitchen since it was sewn at night. I couldn't cook that night; that's why I had to demonstrate how it would be used by my men in the kitchen so my men can cook content on Steemit.

Since I am the first contestant and have no entry to comment on, I decided to comment on last week's entries and the original post of this challenge to get my full point.

I invite @blessedlife, @okere-blessing and @shahidalinaz.

My friend, always so creative—that photo really captures the energy, and no wonder: the kitchen deserves it. And yes, I agree that the apron should be long and cover everything; the idea is to keep ourselves clean. I love the hat—it’s super cute.

I just finished mine a little while ago; I’ll share them tomorrow. Warm regards from Margarita.

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.

Hi! I can see clearly you has fun this week ful filling the activities. Sure I know you can cook and be very creative on cooking and on sewing.

You made a classical chef hat an apron and reflected on the way it was convinient for you with the material you had on hand. Great job.

People on the supermarket Will remember you as a cook and content creator, for sure.

Thanks for the compliment na. It was actually funny doing such a content. I just wanted to be unique in my presentation.
