Tribute to the Book- Ponniyin Selvan - Tamil Epic Novel

Tell us about that book you read that changed your life.

Ponniyin Selvan(Son of River Kaveri) is a popular Tamil novel written by Kalki. It was serialized in Kalki Weekly from 1950-1955. Due to popular support for this novel, Kalki magazine published the same novel serially in different periods. It has also been published as a separate book and has seen many editions.

This historical novel is based on the Chola Empire around the year 1000. Ponniyin Selvan(Son of River Kaveri) has also been staged as a drama by various theater groups. This novel is divided into 5 parts namely New Flood, Windstorm, Killing Sword, Manimakudam and Tyaga Shigaram. It has more than 300 chapters in total.

Although this novel has been serialized in weekly magazines, it has become very popular among people through occasional dramas and cinema scenes. Recently the story was made into a movie and released in two parts. Then I went to the theater and watched both parts with my family.

Even though the story of Selvan Kathi, a huge novel, is told briefly in two movies, the history of Tamils is very well told. So far I was unable to teach my children the history of Tamils, but I was very happy that this movie taught them the history of Tamils.

After that they came to know how big was Chola dinasty and the kingdom, they still search about in on internet and you tube for further history about Tamil and our ancestors.

What is your favorite literary genre and author, share the reasons.

Many lines in this novel have surprised the reader. It is because of such lines that this novel has come out in so many parts. It motivates the reader to read more. One particular paragraph in it really impressed me. I mention it here. When the Prince "Arul Mozhi Varman" was returning home after winning the Sri Lankan war, he was coming towards the fort on an elephant to meet his sister and get blessings.

At the same time, he was riding the elephant like an elephant monk instead of sitting on the throne on top of the elephant. All arrangements were made for his arrival and everyone was waiting there to welcome him. Young women like Prince Arul Mozhi Varman because he is very handsome and majestic. So, many women lined up to see him. There was also a maid working there. She lusts after the prince. So she was standing holding a plate with the aarti along with the women taking the aarti to welcome him.

At that time, when the prince who was sitting like an elephant came down and stood in front of her, she did not expect it at all and left the plate down. The tray falls and rolls away with a loud "Dan" and everyone frowns, some taunting her that this is ominous. But the prince smiles and woos her.

He touched her and patted her. Among the girls who feel that it is their greatest privilege to meet the prince, when the prince himself comes and touches her, she faints in shock. She faints and immediately the prince orders the servants to take care of her

If you had the opportunity to write a book, what would it be about?

I love to tell stories I have told many moral stories to my children I have made up some stories myself I have also written some stories in Steemit. So maybe if I write a book I will write moral stories for children because, from a young age, they should be taught good education and morals by stories like this By telling them they will understand easily and interestingly.

Apart from this I love cooking and crafting so I think I can write books on recipes too. Similarly, I think craft recipes can be written as a tutorial book, I have already posted a lot of recipes and craft recipes on Steemit. I think they can be compiled and published as a book.

Recommend a book to your readers on Steemit.

I recomond the same book " The ponniyin Selvan" English version to read and know the Epic and history of Chola dinasty and their Kinks and their lifestyle and Tamil culture.

I would like to invite
