"... the Rabbit hole"

Do you know where the rabbit hole metaphor came from? Some have their earlirst memory of this methaphor in The Matrix. I can still remember that iconic scene where Morpheus offers Neo two pills saying the exact words quoted below.

“You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.
You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.”

While The Matrix may have popularised this metaphor around the year 2000, the whole concept was borrowed from an old animated story I knew as Alice in Wonderland. Featuring a little girl and her weird imagination.

Just as in The Matrix, Alice had followed a white rabbit and it resulted in her tumbling down the rabbit's hole. Don't ask how big the rabbit was, you need to watch this cartoon. The hole was the entrance that led her into Wonderland; an imaginary world where normal rules did not apply. Going from a simple fall and everything turned upside-down.

I feel Alice was the good type of stubborn, because she will not let the chaos in the wonderland alter who she really was, a characteristic in very short supply these days. I believe people are easily moulded by popular opinion these days. I just hope cartoons like this can help people stand their ground and ask questions and not just follow along with The Queen screaming “Off with her head!” over nothing.

Today, I will be drawing Alice as an example of one who maintains her identity amidst a chaotic world.

Drawing Procedure

Step 1 [Preparing the Canvas]

I got my A4 paper ready with my username. The drawing orientation is landscape and the date is Wednesday May 27 celebrated as Children's Day.

Step 2 [sketching and structure]

A good sketch will always guide me through the process, so I started the drawing with a sketch which helped with scaling the drawing.

The character now has some flesh attached to the skeletal sketch I started with.

1000160309.jpg

I added some details to Alice's sketchy head, her hair, upper body and gown.

At this point, I had to clean off the sketch and added more details to the face and hair

1000160322.jpg

Now the sketch is ready for shading and colouring

Step 3 [Shading and colouring]

Starting with Alice's hair, which is yellow

1000160328.jpg

Then her gown takes the blue colour

1000160329.jpg

Alice's shoe is black, so I coloured it black.

1000160330.jpg

Now it's time to give Alice a skin colour, and eye colour. Her eyes were as blue as her gown.

Step 4 [Finishing]

It's time to take a selfie

I made a selfie for this post, but my daughter captured this beautiful picture. So I decided to use it

Conclusion and Invitation

With Cartoon character art, I believe we can tell stories more effectively, develop better eye-hand coordination and time-travel back to the past. I am inviting @bubaa, @asuquodavid, @annydee01 and @josepha to drop a comment.
