I agree with you that smoking has terrible physical consequences which are not only for smokers but also for the people around them. One thing I have learned is that addiction is a very complex case and teaching about the harm alone is just pouring water on a rock, it never or barely penetrates, so they often do not quit. I know a lot of people who say they have been smoking for years and nothing has happened to them. While educating them about smoking, it is also important to educate them about the addiction they have and how to fight the addiction so they can quit.
