I doubt the bank would ask us for proof if you’ve bought a car or had a nose job, as in neither case is it the same type of loan you might apply for. I say ‘might’, because it’s not easy to get a loan, and much more is required or expected. Someone on a good salary who has never had any debts, for example, won’t simply be granted a loan, simply because there is no history of repaying debts.
Here, everything is calculated and treated as a debt or loan, including mobile phones paid for in instalments, maintenance payments and student loans, and the information is kept on file for years.
The only people who are rich here are those without debts or loans on whatever they’ve bought (from holidays to clothes to cars and houses, often also covered by life insurance).
When it comes to governments, it’s the same everywhere, and if you ask me, they’re the worst when it comes to drawing up a budget, sticking to it and repaying debts. Whilst the debts grow, they continue to fund the most ridiculous aid programmes and wars. I don’t understand how that works. Because people don’t rise up and kick them out, they get away with it, including the fat salaries and bonuses.
