SC-S28/W6-Movie Highlights | "Feel-Good Finale" – Sweet Sunshine (2020)

Some films are not merely an hour of fun but one that you can remember even after the movie finishes. Sweet Sunshine is such a film- silent, sincere and very emotional. I found myself wishing to watch it during this final week of the Season 28 challenge not only as a task but also as a kind of reminder of the fact that even when life is difficult, it is possible to heal.

The film is a journey of emotion of a young musician TJ Millhouse who used to sing under glamorous stage lights and cheering. His father dies and his world comes to an end in a jolt. What had been a happy thing turns into nothing and the music that made him what he was turns into a quietness. He retreats in sorrow, separating himself with all that was important to him.

However, the life then gives him something tender and unusual Sunny, a glee-filled young lady whose arrival is like a sunrise after a severe storm. She does not press him, does not criticize him, sees no need to, she is just next to him, gives him company, support, and silent sympathy. It is through her that TJ embarks on a painful and long journey of returning to himself.

The moment that made me smile or laugh the most

It has a touching scene when Sunny persuades TJ to pick up his guitar. His hands shake, his voice goes a notch sharper and he stammers like he fears that the music would give him away. But Sunny simply smiles at him, and then seems to stroke him like a mother helping a frightened bird take flight in the air again.

It is not perfect when he first starts to play those few chords but it is beautiful. The smile caused by her happy response made me smile broadly since she was celebrating the progress but not perfection. She did not want him to be the star that he used to be, she was simply proud that he made an attempt.

It was a reminder to me that sometimes you should celebrate the little things in life: waking up on a bad emotional day, deciding to press on when it would be easier to quit, smiling once more after months of crying. The most joyous of all things is, however, sometimes merely the ability to have the courage to start all over again.

What made the film comforting, joyful, or hopeful

The honesty of Sweet Sunshine is the comfort of the product. It is not assuming that curing is fast and easy. It demonstrates that the process of grief is not that clean, forecast able, and intimate. TJ is stronger some days; he falls apart again some days. The film, however, keeps onto hope through all the scenes like a fine thread.

The happiness is that the music has come back into the life of TJ but not as a profession or as a show, but as a healing lotion to the damaged soul. It is magic seeing a person fall in love with something again. Every song he performs is like a prayer, a liberation, a movement towards completeness.

And best of all the movie is optimistic in that it reminds us that light could come back even after the darkest of nights. The character of Sunny is a symbol of warmth, support and patience, which every human being requires at one point. She teaches TJ that despite everything written on her, life is not the best but nonetheless it should not defeat you.

Would I recommend this movie to a friend who’s feeling down?

I absolutely would.
This is not the case that it does away with pain, rather it provides meaning to it.
There is no hurry in the feelings of this movie. Rather, it quietly murmurs that it is all right to hurt, to pause and to be lost, but it is not all right to forget that you have a life to live.
I would recommend Sweet Sunshine to a bereaved friend, to a friend struggling with self-doubt, to a friend who has been discouraged or lost his/her way.

It teaches something non complicated yet effective, that we are not the ones who get healed. There are times we just have to have someone to be near us, to hear us out and to remind us that we are not our wounds.

How the movie improved my mood and perspective

I did not find myself post-watching of the film automatically feeling that my issues were no longer there. Rather I experienced something greater-I felt visible. I felt understood.
The movie made me aware of the fact that grief and hope are compatible. You feel depressed now, but you have a hope of tomorrow. And yet you may be broken and be able to be beautiful.

I was saddened the most by the fact that the message the film is sending is that healing does not necessarily appear dramatic. It is sometimes as simple as getting out of bed, trying once more and not throwing the world away. At times it is taking the help of caring individuals.

It helped me think about my life in a new way- about the dreams that I have left behind because of fear, about moments when I felt sad and thought that I was not able to speak, about those who helped me when I was not able to help myself. The film provided me with the spiritual power not to lose faith, not to stop creating, not to stop hoping.

It seemed that something important had been achieved as I deeply inhaled at the end of the credits even bruised hearts may be taught to sing.

I invite @josepha, @stef1 and @mikitaly to drop a very constructive comments on this post and also to participate in this contest.
