Self control is the ability to bring oneself under check to do or not to do what’s right in any circumstance being faced not with standing what the odds are or who the odds are against.

Self control is the ability to rule oneself to cause oneself to do what he or she is supposed to do at the right time too not withstanding how the person is feeling or the pressure around that want to make the person do otherwise.

For example, someone gets you so angry to the point that it could lead to a fight if you want to retaliate. Self control at this juncture would be not to fight this person but be able to keep your anger in check.

How do you know someone that has self control ?

A tree is known by its fruits. The type of things someone does or says when provoked simple tells if the person has self control or not. So self control is revealed through actions or words.

I heard a story of a man that his neighbor insulted him and then they began to exchange words, the one that was insulted started fighting with his neighbor and hit him on the head. The man slumped and died.

If he had exercised self control, he would have just ignored the insult and would have saved himself a whole lot of trouble. Now he was charged with man slaughter because of anger.

Is self control an inborn behavior or it's learned? Support your answers with facts.

Some of our characters are inborn traits while some are acquired. From behavioral statistics, it’s said that 30% of our characters are inborn traits while 70% are acquired as we grow up.

Some persons are naturally patient while some are naturally hot tempered. What matters most is that we maintain the good traits that will help us and also try to deal with the bad ones by replacing them.

Self control can be learnt as we grow older in life because it will help us to be able to live peacefully with people and avoid making decisions that we will regret later.

We should always try to exercise self control in how we relate with people and in what we say because words spoken cannot be retrieved.

How far can you control yourself in the face of temptation and challenges?

Self control is really not easy but as believers, we have the Holy Spirit within us and if we yield ourselves to him, he can help us to keep a rein over our emotions, words and actions.

Sometimes I act rashly or fast without thinking through my actions and they have always turned out bad. So this period, I try as much as possible to ensure that I don’t take actions when I am emotionally unstable.

Actions taken when too excited and too angry or depressed would always turn out wrong. I also try not to talk much when I am angry so that I won’t say the things that I will regret later. I can replay events over and over again in my head until I am able to reason it through.

I try as much as possible to control myself from doing things that I will regret later. I have made many mistakes from being too hasty or from anger and I don’t want those repeating again. Self control is a very important part of our lives that we should imbibe.
