Time is one of the important factors that we humans use to measure what we want to achieve, what have achieved, or what we have not achieved. I would say that time is that length of period that we consider when we want to achieve our targets.

How we make use of the time is more important than the time itself. When we make use of our time judiciously, we achieve our targets. When time is not judiciously used, achieving the set targets may be delayed or not even achieved.

Why I think time is considered more valuable than money

‘Time na money’.’ This is one of the statements that people who are conscious about how much money they want to make between a specified period of time make. This statement also comes to mind and informs them how much money one could lose if they fail to use or invest their time on something that is more valuable.

Now, from what I point out above, time is more valuable than money does not mean that money is not valuable. It means that when we judiciously invest time in meaningful projects, we be highly rewarded for investing such a time.

Take for instance, it is only a matter of time invested well that notable business men, professors, engineers, doctors, bankers, artisans, became what they are today in our society. They took advantage that opportunities presented to them, to engage themselves meaningful y in projects that rewards their efforts.

My experience when I felt I used my time wisely was during my NYSC in 2017. During that time, I invested my time on learning ICT skills that shaped my life and is still doing till now.

During my NYSC, I used it learn ICT skills and then moved up to advanced financial management Technology skills. How it happened was that, I enrolled in the ICT class which I attended in the evening. Back then, I was teaching in secondary school as a youth corps member. When I come back from school, I eat and have some rest for few minutes. After that, I go for the ICT class in the evening. I usually go for the ICT classes there time a week so that I will finish the course before the end of my service year.

Taking advantage of my time during my service year to learn the ICT skills has really paid off that today, I could be called up to perform some financial management tasks using technology or the computers.

Some ways people can manage their time better in daily life

People can invest and manage their time better in the following ways:

  • Ensure your goals are clear
Don't make the daily targets cumbersome. Break them down into important and unimportant tasks.
  • Adopt daily activity assessment
After carrying out your activity for the day, assess whether you achieved the target you set for the day.

  • Gain focus
Distractions can limit how you focus. So anything that will take away your mind from what you have set to achieve should be avoided.

  • Making a daily plan
Before the next day, outline the things that you would want achieve or do the next day. In that plan, you state what you would do in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening.

As a young graduate back then that served my fatherland, I saved up sum amount of money to set up a business when I'm back from my service.

A friend of mine was planning to travel abroad and so was selling some of his items in the shop to raise money for the travell. He informed me about his plans and so I saw it as an opportunity to take. The shop was well equipped and he had many customers because of where the shop was located.

I thought over it and decided to inform him about my interest to buy some of the items and continue the business. He accepted and I started buying the items. After buying the ones I could afford, I was now waiting for the day he would tell me his travelling documents are ready. We discussed that as soon as his travelling documents are ready, he would take me to the landlord of the shop so he informed him about me taking over the shop and subsequent rentage.

As I was waiting for us to meet the landlord of the shop, I didn't know he had already given the shop to someone else. I tried to reach out to him but he was not responding as his lines were switched off. The said shop was still under lock and key for several months with the items I bought still inside there.

At this point, I felt highly disappointed and discouraged. Finally, I was informed that he had secured his travell visa and is out of the country.

After for to five months he traveled, I was called by the landlord to come and pick the items that I bought as he has rented his shop to another person. Hmmm, it was not an easy challenge on that time. I looked left and right thinking on what to do. Imagine a young graduate losing huge amount of money just because dearing for self employment. I lost the shop and I lost the money.

If I got the clue that he was not going to release the shop to me, I would not have taken that decision to buy the items in the first place. Me and this friend of mine attended the same school and I normally come around his shop. So we were close friends then.

I so much regretted my decision to connect with this kind of person. But thank God I still moved on and succeeding.
