Introduction

It is always a pleasure to come here and share my thoughts on issues that affect our different everyday lives.

One financial habit we always hear about is , saving money! We are always advised to save part of our income, prepare for emergencies, and plan for the future. But the reality for many Nigerians today is that saving is becoming much more difficult.

Sometimes, it is not because people do not want to save. The problem is that after receiving income and taking care of the most important needs, there may be very little or nothing left to set aside for saving purposes.

The cost of food, transportation, electricity, accommodation, healthcare, education, communication, and other necessities can quickly consume a person's income. This makes the idea of saving look easy when we talk about it, but much harder when we actually have to do it.

The Rising Cost of Living

One of the major reasons saving has become difficult is the rising cost of everyday necessities of life. The same amount of money that could take care of several needs in the past, can no longer go as far nowadays.

Someone may receive their income with plans to save, but after making necessary expenses like buying food, paying bills, transporting themselves to work, and handling other responsibilities, the amount remaining may be very small that inflation would erode its value.

Income and Expenses

Another challenge is that many people's income has not increased at the same rate as their expenses. For instance, salaries and wages doesn't get upward adjustment to take care current inflationary pressures and increasing expenses.

When income is limited and expenses continue to rise, saving becomes a serious challenge and difficult to do. Some people may even have to borrow money before the end of the month just to meet their basic needs.

This is why we should be careful about simply telling people, "Just save money." Saving is important, but people's financial circumstances are different and so are not the same.

Unexpected Expenses

Unexpected expenses can also destroy a person's savings plan. A medical bill, urgent family responsibility, damaged phone or necessary items in the house, transport problem, or other emergency can require money that was not included in the monthly budget. When there is no emergency fund, people may have to use whatever little they have saved. And come to think of it, how is easy to have emergency fund when saving itself is difficult?

Social Pressure and Spending

There is also the issue of social pressure. Sometimes we spend money because we want to keep up with friends, attend events, buy things we may not necessarily need, or maintain a particular lifestyle just be or look like others.

Social media can make this worse because we constantly see people showing off their purchases and achievements through the social media.

What Do We Do?

Even when saving is difficult, developing the habit can still be valuable. The amount does not always have to be large. Someone may start with a small amount and gradually build the habit as income improves.

It is also important to distinguish between needs and wants; preparing a simple budget, reduce unnecessary spending, avoid taking unnecessary debt or loans, and look for legitimate ways to increase our income.

Saving should not mean denying ourselves every basic need. It means making deliberate decisions and managing the money that we have.

Conclusion

In conclusion, saving money has now become difficult for many Nigerians because of the combination of rising living expenses, limited income, unexpected responsibilities, and social pressure to spend with the little income.

However, financial discipline is still important and matters. Even when the amount we can save is small, developing the habit to save can help us prepare for the future.

At the same time, we should recognize that saving alone cannot solve all our financial problems. Increasing income, controlling unnecessary expenses, planning properly, and making wise financial decisions are also necessary to adopt or practice.

For me, the goal should not be to compare how much we save with other people. The important thing is to understand our own financial situation and make the best decisions we can with the resources we have available to us.

What do you think is the biggest reason saving money has become difficult for Nigerians today—is it low income, high cost of living, unexpected expenses, or spending habits?
