How open are you to learning? Are you teachable?

To be sincere, I wasn’t really teachable. I used to learn everything the hard way. Even when people shared their experiences with me, it hardly moved me. I preferred to see things for myself before believing them.
For example, I already knew alcohol wasn’t good. I had seen people get drunk, lose control, and embarrass themselves publicly, but none of those experiences taught me anything. I still felt maybe it wouldn’t happen to me.
One day, I decided to try it myself. Unfortunately, I drank too much and became heavily intoxicated. I came back home very late, completely drunk, and ended up sleeping outside on the floor. It was one of the worst and most embarrassing experiences of my life.

That night became a turning point for me. I realized some lessons are painful when you refuse to learn from others. Since that day, alcohol irritates me. My friends still invite me for drinks and laugh about how drunk I once got, but I always refuse. The experience taught me self-control and made me wiser.

What is that lesson you learned the hard way?

I learned the dangers of alcohol the hard way. Even though I had seen others suffer from drunkenness, I ignored the warnings until I personally experienced the pain, embarrassment, and regret that came with it.

Do you think learning it that way made you a better person today?

Yes, it truly changed me. The experience didn’t just teach me about alcohol; it changed my mindset. I became more careful with my decisions and started understanding the importance of listening to advice before making costly mistakes.
Some people may think drinking is nothing serious, but if you continue carelessly, you may eventually understand the same pain I felt. Beyond that, drunkenness is not pleasing to God, so it’s better to avoid that path before regret teaches the lesson for you.
Sometimes, wisdom is learning from other people’s mistakes instead of waiting for your own.
