If you were given full authority for one year in your community or country, what is the first issue you would address?

In the context of my country, if given the full authority for one year in my community or country, the first issue I would address would be Insecurity and Banditry. It is a high-ranking concern that is affecting lives, businesses, as well as the overall development of the country.

The reason for insecurity

  • It alters economic growth
  • Results in the displacement of communities
  • Affects education and food security

Possible actions:

  • Strengthen security forces
  • Community engagement
  • Economic support
  • Technology integration

Strengthen Security Forces

  • I will deploy trained personnel, increasing the presence in hotspots such as Niger, Kaduna, and Zamfara.
  • I will equip and train by providing modern tools, intelligence, as well as tactics training.
  • I will also collaborate with local vigilantes, hunters, and community leaders.

Community Engagement

  • I will dialogue with locals, leaders, and affected communities.
  • I will build trust by addressing grievances and providing support.
  • I also engage in intelligence sharing by encouraging locals to report any and every suspicious activity.

Economic Support

  • I will bring about job creation by initiating projects such as agriculture and infrastructure in affected areas.
  • I will support farmers by providing them with seeds, tools, and markets.
  • I will rebuild displaced communities by providing them with housing, schools, and healthcare.

Technology Integration

  • I will introduce surveillance, setting up drones, and CCTV in strategic locations and areas.
  • I will enforce tracking by collaborating with tech companies for tracking of bandits.
  • I will bring about effective and top-notch communication by improving networks in rural areas.

Why did you choose this issue over others?

Insecurity and banditry cut across manifold facets of Nigerian life:

Economic Impact

  • It disrupts trade, agriculture, investments, and hampers international relations and recognition.

Humanitarian Crisis

  • It results in displacement, trauma, and deaths.

Foundation for Other Issues

  • Insecurity and banditry are a blockage and obstruct progress in education, healthcare, and governance.

Addressing insecurity gives rise to a foundation for dealing with other challenges such as healthcare access, education gaps, and poverty.

What is that one difficult decision you would have to make?

In view of the context of addressing insecurity in Nigeria, one difficult decision I would have to make would be:

Balancing Security Measures and Human Rights

  • Deploying security forces might result in clashes with communities or inadvertent harm to civilians.
  • Addressing root causes such as poverty, unemployment, or unevenness calls for long-term investment versus immediate security needs.

For instance, should I prioritize:

  1. Immediate crackdown on bandits alongside possible collateral damage?
  2. Long-term solutions, such as economic programs, dialogue with a slower impact?

This decision therefore, involves weighing lives, long-term peace, and justice.

How would you explain this decision to people who disagree with you?

Explaining tough decisions calls for empathy and clarity. Therefore, my approach will be:

  1. I will acknowledge the concerns of the people which may include security measures and human rights.
  2. I will share rationale, stating my chosen or preferred approach and reasons which would be balanced security in addition to addressing root causes.
  3. I will highlight my goals, explaining the aim which is safety and long-term peace for everyone.
  4. Finally, I will invite feedback by asking how the approach can be improved.

Thank you
