SLC-S29/W4-“Thinking and Ideas!| Rethinking the Normal!”

in Steem4Nigeria4 days ago

I don't know why people value materialistic things so much more than the lives of humans. A lot of stories and beliefs about consumerism and materialism have made me wonder what we are living for as we are all bound to die one day

Name one practice, belief, or system that people accept as normal but should be questioned.

The one practice that people accept as normal but should be questioned is the normalisation of materialism and consumerism as the primary measure of happiness and success. This practice has put so many people under pressure to do wrong things just to accumulate wealth.

Why do you think people rarely challenge it?

I think it has become a societal system for people to advertise their wealth and a cultural norm. I think people rarely challenge it because advertising, societal systems, and cultural norms have made people believe that acquiring more and more wealth equal l to having a better life.

I see this as a social pressure to keep up with others, making it difficult to step back and reconsider the true value of material wealth. And I think in our society the people who only challenge it are elderly and not the younger generations that are ready to do anything for wealth.

What could improve if this “normal” way changed?

If this "normal" way changed, society would shift towards valuing community, relationships, sustainability, and well-being more deeply.

Also if this "normal" way of people prioritising material things change it can lead to us experiencing more equitable distribution of resources, increased personal fulfilment, and reduced environmental impact that are rooted in meaningful experiences instead of possession.

At least our politicians wouldn't be stealing our money and we wouldn't be hearing things like money ritual, kidnapping, etc.

What might be lost if it disappeared completely?

If consumerism and materialism were to disappear completely, things like motivation for innovation, economic growth in certain sectors, and the diverse ways in which people find joy and self-expression through their possessions might be lost.

The challenge we would have would be finding a balance system that fosters both progress and well-being without laying more emphasis on material wealth.

Hi @jasminemary, welcome to thinking and ideas week 4

My Observations:

It's quite a shameful thing to see your mates living all good with the material things and you are not up to that standard. Even when you know you are trying, but the moment you see the difference, it becomes obvious to you that you have not tried enough.

Material wealth aren't bad afterall, its a part of live but the lust for it coupd be dangerous. Its more serious now that everyone wants to impressthemselves, living and acting what they are not.
