SEC WK2 : The language in my country

Language is a means of communicating amongst members of the same tribe, community, or country. However, some countries have only one language while others have multiple languages. Here in Nigeria my country, we have too many languages and this has restricted the growth of the country. However, the three major languages recognized in Nigeria include:

• The Hausa
• The Yorubas
• The Igbos
The above are the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria but we have more languages from minority groups. I will be using the contest guidelines to unveil the language in my country.

What is the name of your country? How many languages can be found in your country?

The name of my country is Nigeria. This is the giant of African countries of the world. It's situated in the Gulf of Guinea and equally has a lot more natural landmarks and is also known for wildlife reserves.

There are a lot of things to know when it comes to the natural endowment of the country. Nigeria has Agbokim waterfall, Obudu cattle ranch, dense rainforest, and Zuma Rock which is 725M tall outside Abuja, the capital of Nigeria which remains one of the most recognized sites in the country.

Nigeria is made up of 36 states and the capital is located at Abuja. You should know that one of its largest cities is Lagos, which remains one of the metropolitan areas in the world and also the largest in Africa.

Among the listed languages in your country, how many are you familiar with?

As I said earlier, Nigeria has too many languages but as an African most populous country it's blessed with different cultures, tribes, and traditions.

I want you to know that there are 520 local languages spoken by Nigerians but among these, nine are extinct. These include:

1. Hausa
2. Yoruba
3. Igbo
4. Fulfulde
5. Ibibio
6. Edo
7. Kanuri
8. Urhobo

You should also know that there are several languages spoken in each of the states that make up the 36 states of the country (Nigeria).

As a citizen of Nigeria, I'm able to speak my local language which is Ibibio, Efik, and Igbo language. Since I live in Cross River State, I now understand parts of their language if not all. The truth is, if you want to know about any of the major languages in Nigeria, you should give yourself to learning because each language is written out for learning. However, all our major languages are taught in schools in our various states.

How has this language improved/helped your life and business?

I discovered knowing most of the major languages in my country will help me to excel in business and bring great help to me. I was opportune to school in Igbo land and knowing how to speak the language brought great assistance to me.

Doing my photography business, you need to use the language to say "pls come and snap a picture" (Bia siya photo). The little I was able to understand, I made use of and I got a lot of customers from the eastern part of Nigeria. Note: This language has connected me to people and given me lots of work.

Are you willing to teach your children these languages? Yes/No. State your reason

My answer is yes. The reason is; I have no other language and country than Nigeria and my Ibibio language. I would like to teach my children my local language and the languages of the country. This will be an added advantage for them to grow with that knowledge and be able to associate with fellows and make communication effective.

Conclusion
Language is very important to humans all around the world. Your language is your culture and the way of life of the people.

I have been able to speak some of the languages in my country and it has been beneficial to me. The fact remains that, some people who were not born in their home town, could not speak their local languages which is bad. If you fall in this category, please look for the handbook of your native language and study it daily. In two to three years, you should be conversant with your mother's tongue.
