Steem4nigeria Accelerator Contest Week 24: Giving and how it should be done.

Giving is a learnt art that involves providing something to another person, and it's done without expecting anything in return. Though it is understandable to expect the recipient of the act to appreciate the gift.
While some gifts may be material, some are not. For example, you can give someone your time or attention, affection or love. This are gifts that can't be bought with cash. Some of the most powerful gifts do not come from the wallets but from the heart and givers don't give because they have enough, its often a way of expressing ones feelings coming from a place of empathy and compassion.

A gift should be given out of compassion to alleviate the condition of the recipient. You may also give a gift to make the recipient feel loved, valued, appreciated or cared for.
It is ok to give when expressing genuine gratitude towards the recipient or when it's our plan to build a relationship. Giving has always been a powerful act that creates equally powerful results and so should not be abused.

Making a public spectacle of one's generosity is a blatant abuse of the art of giving as those in the habit often seek recognition and glory from onlookers. The motives behind such acts is often selfish, burn out of the desire to appear good, gain fame and some social status.
A lot of people will feel reaped of their dignity when the gift they received gets publicized. People should feel satisfied with the joy they derive when they make a donation in private. If the recipient so wishes, they may tell of the good act, though some givers still do not approve of such publicity. We should create a culture that shame those who give for the press, and loudly praise the anonymous giver.
Imagine a news segment that says. The orphanage at Ewet street is expressing appreciation as they were bombed by an anonymous gift of clothing and cash worth 10,000 Steem which was dropped at their door step this morning....
While a man in his house is having tears of joy even when his account has an equivalent debit.
He alone knows he was the giver and the subject of the news that day.

Do not call the press to an orphanage because you want to make a donation. Make your gift in private and enjoy that personal secret and the satisfaction that comes from giving.

Do not orchestrate a situation that forces people to give a gift, not really because they want to give but making them give because they are trying to avoid the embarrassment of not giving at that time.

When your man is in a potentially embarrassing situation, like when he has no cash on him while he needs it. That is not the time to show off and give him or pay for him. He is already in a bad spot and doing that will make it worse. Find the best way to give him the money without telling the public, he will appreciate it more.

When a wealthy person has an occasion. do not give gifts with your name engraved on it because you will like him to reciprocate some day. In truth, when the person is wealthy, they have plenty of material things. At such point, they see more value in things like a greeting card. most often they need what they can not buy with money such as your genuine concern, friendship and true loyalty.

Some immaterial gifts are so priceless, a spouse might see fidelity as a precious gift and appreciates it. A child who would like a new pair of shoes but who realizes that the parents love, attention and time is an even more valuable gift to him.
Some people are more skilled at the art of giving than others, able to select the right time, place and the most appropriate gift and creating pleasant surprises.
While on the receiving end, knowing how to show appreciation is also important. it's not just enough to appreciate in your heart, you have to express it. It's good to always notice and appreciate all the little ways that someone shows that they really care about you.
