SC-S28/W5-Movie Highlights|"Old is Gold" (Sound of music)
Greetings and welcome to my old is gold entry for the Steemit challenge week 28.
Sound of music is a family / musical drama that was released in the year 1965.
Directed by Robert Fox and distributed by the legendary 20th Century Fox. The sound of music gives us glimpses of the lush, beautiful and scenic countries of Austria and Germany, albeit calm on the surface, the country is brewing as the nazis are on the rise, and World War 2 is on the horizon.
The movie takes us into the life of the wealthy Captain Von trapp family. A family consisting of a father and 7 kids, their mother is late and with her goes all the merry, life and music this family had been accustomed to all their lives.
Captain von trapp, a busy man needs a governess to care for his children. Governesses were more like live in house teachers who taught the children both academic education and accepted societal ways of living.
Every governess that has come has been run off by the children who play all sorts of tricks on them till the governesses pack and leave. Then comes Maria, a young nun who’s been shipped off from the convent for her penchant to albeit disobey or bend rules of the convent. She has been assigned to the von trap family as their governess.
The first thing she notices is a hostile welcome by the kids, an unsmiling captain who is saddled with the responsibility of remarrying again so his children can have a mother to care for them, and then a lonely, quiet sad house that was once filled with memories, laughter, and music.
Will music sound again?? This time not just from instruments, but from their hearts!!
- The authenticity of the movie:
It didnt fake realities instead it brought real life scenarios to buttress the movie.
- The story telling was deliberately slow and unfolded beautifully with time.
Emotions were deeply delved into and the characters of the movie were given time to fully develop. It was like watching all stages of a rose petal bud, not jumping into the final after stage one, Unlike newer films that are very fast paced.
The locations used were actual real life places, very beautiful and visually compelling. Today we have a lot of CGI in movies and can’t tell what’s real and what’s not.
- The focus on family/ relationships, and faith.
Family is the core building block of society and that film really brought it together.
How that faith and family, are the most precious and important things a person can own. As compared to newer films that don’t hold up these principles.
- In as much as there was love expressed, there was moral propriety and compass. When Liesel, (the captain’s eldest daughter) danced with her soldier disguised mail delivery boyfriend. Today our newer films are filled with moral decadence.
Oh the film really aged well and It is definitely on my list of movies to see again alone, with my spouse and kids. One thing I love about this film is that family members of all ages can sit down and enjoy it, unlike a lot of adult only contents we have now.
The music! - for instance the popular lyrics from “Do re mi”. A sulfa notation popularly known across all generations.
Its relatability.
Viewers can find themselves in the carefree Maria, in the naughty prank filled Von trapp kids, in the quest to be seen as one grows into womanhood as played by liesel captain’s first daughter. The visually captivating real life locations used in the movie.
| How did the characters or themes relate to today’s world? |
|---|
- A stand against Injustice:
Captain Von trap clearly knew that the nazis invasions, were wrong and for that, captain Von trapp refused to join the fight thereby forfeiting his lands. A lot of lessons in standing up for what’s right to use in today’s world.
- Integrity first before comfort:
The captain chose to suffer the consequences of loosing his land to maintain his integrity.
- The courage to start afresh:
The Von trapp family have to start life afresh after loosing everything. A deep dive into courage if you ask me.
A timeless gold classic!!
