Hello my dear Steemians,

I was thinking about the issues and problems that are common in any country, in any society and decided to draw your attention to the issues of waste and garbage.

Waste and Garbage

When we think about the topic then there are many different types that we could divide them into:

  • food waste: the supermarkets in Western countries are full of different type of the same products, for example, let’s take simple staff like milk. There are whole milk, semi-skimmed and skimmed, the same time recently due to many people who decide to try something different in the way of vegetarian then there are almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, and pea milk. All those milk sorts have short life and I do not think that all of them will be used, majority will expire and the milk will dispose.

Cheese, we see many similar art of cheese but from different manufacturer, from taste there is no difference but the price is different. Again we know that many dairy products have short life. The same like vegetables and fruits. How much will be daily thrown away!

  • Plastic bags as carry bags, in recent past in shops in UK and in Europe in supermarkets everyone received a carry bag for free, therefore, every took one and later on some people just throw them away without appropriate disposing in garbage for recycling. That is why another reason of plastic everywhere on ground and in sea.

Thankfully now such carry bags are made from strong material, that is why they are more expensive and they can be used multiple times, so people keep them and use again for next shopping.

Also in our shops there are new carry bags made of paper and that is great! It was in 60’s and 70’ and it was good, paper is natural material and soul-destroying with time.

  • Plastic bottles and cans. Another problem that we see in bushes, on beaches. In Europe it is long ago that such bottles and cans can be returned and deposit will be returned to customer. Usually deposit is €0.25, that is why people return all those disposables. Unfortunately, we do not have such system in UK yet. Although couple of years ago it was a lot of talks about that.

How we can contribute to solution of waste and garbage problem?

First of all we all know that everyone can contribute and let’s start with us and own family:

  • Children, nursery and school: we know that our children once they could listen and speak they try to do and imitate everything that we adult do. That is the best time to teach our children. In such institution like nursery, it is good to have garbage bins in different colours: Green for recycling, Blue for paper, Red for food. I think it is better to use something colourful then kids will remember it easier. Of course, we should continue teaching our children that garbage need to be dispose in certain bin and not thrown outside on lawn, left on beach or playground etc.

  • School: it is good to organise regular missions to clean beaches, parks or even to clean school ground from any type of garbage and also to produce some articles about that and issue in local press.

  • Food Supermarkets: at the end of the day the products that expire on the same day they could sale them either for very little price so that they are gone, people buy rather than to dispose the products. Also such supermarkets could bring such products that close to expire to charity kitchen for homeless or to care homes or schools for free lunches for children from poor families.

Who would benefit most from this solution?

  • our environment will benefit if we regular clean contaminated area, clean soil, clean water

  • industry, if we recycle plastic and metal cans and glasses then we do not need to reproduce from new resources hopefully that will make it profitable for industry and good for nature

  • such institutions like care homes, schools and charity organisations for homeless will benefit from getting enough food for those vulnerable members of our society

What possible challenges or limitations do you think your idea might face?

Challenges or Limitations:

  • Supermarkets should agree to do this step to sell for little money that means they may loose profit, I believe if the supermarkets will be contributing to that then they should have interest to do it and one of the condition is if government will reduce the taxes for the those shops

  • Good will of some people could be spoiled that not many would like to take part in separating the garbage and to take part in the actions to clean and collect garbage out in parks, beaches, playground.

  • as parents we all have to continue the same teaching work at home with children, often parents are tired after work and have no energy

It is still doable, of course, not very quickly but it is possible.

"Absolutely! It's a win-win situation if supermarkets can find a way to sell goods at reduced prices while helping to combat waste. If the government backs this with tax incentives, it could encourage more stores to participate and ultimately benefit consumers too. Let's hope we see some positive changes soon!"

¡Holaaa amigo!🤗
