Arise, thou greater livingness than mine;
awaken me, and stir to great design
creation which proceeds in thund'ring falls
descending to that narrow channel — I.

I must imagine, ope my inner eye
to see what, unseen, breathes without the walls
surrounding me with plaster, hunched fears,
and caution set against encroaching years.

The humble predawn sits sedate and cool;
and tepid has become my faithful mug
who coffee holds, dispenses blessed steam,
aroma, motivation to proceed
with whatsoever rises through the day.

Resolved am I to not turn away
but face the chaos, walk into the flame;
to part the crazed mob and find my path
where wildflowers grow who know my name.

Yet not so rapid let my mind outrun
what happens here and now, and sweetly halt
imagination from a future sun—
anticipating evil where is none
save that which manifests by heavy fault
of misperception, arrogance of sin,
which only error means — give means to mend.

Restored am I by the touch of wind
that calls to me come down, calm within
to see the secrets of the town's distress
made quiet by an evening's gentleness.

I must imagine, bare my very breast
to feel what, unfelt by the clothed chest
soft penetrates, suffuses and enshrines
with magic dear simplicity's designs.

Made innocent, appreciation's thrall;
refreshed by the prospect of it all—
the wonder and the medicine of love
that binds the here-below with all above
in sympathy and resonance, rebirth
of beauty on the scintillating earth.

Arise, thou greater livingness than mine;
Convey through the mundane the great design.
