Big waves, Nazaré, Portugal (5 pics)

Nazaré is a very popular seaside resort during summer, despite the fact that it is very dangerous to swim there.

The city is known worldwide by surfers as the "spot" where it is possible to surf the biggest waves in the world.

According to the Guinness Book of the World, Praia do Norte holds the record of the highest waves ever surfed!

Between October and March, waves can reach 100 feet (30 meters) in height.

I was there in September, so a little before the start of the crucial period, so I didn't see 100ft waves, but they were already reaching between 20ft and 40ft.

There were obviously surfers in the water, but none with traditional surfboards.

They were rather with mini boards to be able to ride the waves without too much hassle.

Viewed from above, they do not look that big, but downstairs, on the beach, we feel very well the strength of the waves.

The more we approach, the more we notice details, like the ditches drawn by the waves.

No one was swimming during my visit, the sea was too dangerous.

I didn't even dare to plunge my toe in the water because the current was so strong... next time maybe.
