Drawing Mushu and Cricket

Sketch / Boceto

We start the sketch of the characters Mushu and Cricket. We used geometrical figures such as circles and curved lines to achieve an approximation in the morphology of their bodies, and placing some details, which will help us to better determine their general characteristics. Both characters were made in different layers.

Iniciamos el boceto de los personajes Mushu y Grillo. Usamos figuras geométricas como círculos y líneas curvas para lograr una aproximación en la morfología de sus cuerpos, y colocando algunos detalles, que nos ayudara a determinar mejor las características generales de los mismos. Ambos personajes los realizo en capas distintas.

Outlined / Delineado

Now we move on to the refinement of the lines, here I make a clean drawing which will serve as a basis for applying the color of the next step. With the pencil brush I am modifying the pressure of the line, to obtain lines with different thickness. As in the previous step, in this one I separate the delineation of Mushu and Grillo.

Ahora pasamos al refinado de las líneas, acá realizo un dibujo limpio el cual me servirá como base para aplicar el color del siguiente paso. Con el pincel lápiz voy modificando la presión del trazo, para obtener líneas con diferente grosor. Como en el paso anterior, en este separo el delineado de Mushu y Grillo.

Colour / Color

For the coloring I used a new technique using the selection tool, first I select the drawing area that I am going to color, and directly I apply the color to use, applying this method gives us the freedom to apply that color without fear of going out of line.

Para el coloreado use una técnica nueva usando la herramienta de selección, primero selecciono el área de dibujo que voy a colorear, y directamente aplico el color a usar, aplicando este método nos da la libertad de aplicar dicho color sin miedo de salirnos de la línea.

Shadows / Sombras

For the shading, I directly start to make the texture of Mushu's skin, I use a pattern scheme to resemble the scales of the dragon, then in another layer as a mixture I multiply I reinforce the shadows using the airbrush to get a smooth gradient between the mid-tones.

Para el sombreado, directamente empiezo a realizar la textura de la piel de Mushu, uso un esquema de patrones para asemejar las escamas del dragón, luego en otra capa a modo de mezcla multiplicar voy reforzando las sombras usando el pincel aerógrafo para obtener un degradado suave entre los tonos medios.

Lights / Luces

For the glows we apply the same technique we use for the shadows, we copy the base color to be illuminated, and modify it in the color palette, but this time we lower the saturation a little and increase the brightness, to finally apply it with the airbrush. Also in this step we apply color to the outline of the drawing.

Para los brillos aplicamos la misma técnica que usamos para las sombras, copiamos el color base a iluminar, y modificamos en la paleta de colores, pero esta vez bajamos un poco la saturación y aumentamos el brillo, para finalmente aplicarlo con el pincel aerógrafo. También en este paso aplicamos color al delineado del dibujo.

Background / Fondo

For the background recreate a wooded scene, first apply a blue base, then in the next layer make a transition between dark blue shades to a lighter one, in the other layer with the airbrush draw vegetation in the distance, in the next layer design a cherry tree and behind it a dim sun.

Para el fondo recree un escenario boscoso, primero aplique una base de color azul, luego en la siguiente capa realice una transición entre tonalidades de azul oscuro a uno más claro, en la otra capa con el pincel aerógrafo dibuje vegetación a lo lejos, en la siguiente diseñe un árbol de cerezo y por detrás un sol tenue.

Details / Detalles

We completed our drawing by placing some details, we created some light and shadow effects, we drew the reflection of the sun next to Mushu and Grillo, we made a copy of the characters, we lowered their brightness to zero and passed that layer to the background, then we rolled it a bit to create a 3D shadow and finally we added some leaves from the cherry tree.

Completamos nuestro dibujo colocando algunos detalles, creamos algunos efectos de luz y sombras, dibujamos el reflejo del sol al costado de Mushu y Grillo, realizamos una copia de los personajes bajamos su brillo a cero y pasamos esa capa al fondo, luego la rodamos un poco para crear un sombra en 3D y finalmente agregamos algunas hojas provenientes del cerezo.
