INTRODUCTION

Greetings from me, @destinedhanik to all members of Steem for better life. I'm excited about this contest by @shiftitamanna on benefits of reading books. I couldn't just pass by this contest as I have lots of things to share on this especially since reading books was one of my motivation for being a teacher. So I'll share what I have and I hope you gain something from it.

Let's talk about books.

Books are written texts put down or printed so that people can read and gain knowledge from it. Though we are in the digital age where people can read but books remain the best as they can be transferred from one person to another. Books are an eye opener and it enlightens one. I think one of the best things that can ever happen to anyone is reading. There is a saying that 'If you want to hide something from an African man, hide it in a book' because it is believed that Africans don't read, but this is not so.

Reading ahead of one whether in relation to Academic, finance, marriage, etc can really take one far. One thing I have realized is that those who read ahead are never left behind. I love books and I buy them a lot because it helps me in many ways, not just in passing exams.

Do you think reading books can enrich our knowledge?

Reading of books opens or widens our mind more than we could ever think of. It enriches our knowledge. The question is how?

A person who doesn't read or who reads only what is I'm his capacity and not beyond his capacity cannot go beyond the level he is. Books make is to be more knowledgeable. This is why even pupils, students or undergraduates who study only what is in their level cannot be compared to those who study beyond their level.

Books make us to know things far ahead. It makes is rich in knowledge to the extent of even teaching others. It is ok to watch news and television but if you compare a person who spends 12 hours watching television with someone who spends 8 hours reading books, the person who spends 8 hours reading books will be very rich in terms of know ledge and the use of grammar. A person who reads is very enriched in knowledge in his field and even outside his field, he can me er be stranded. Most of the people or world leaders who made it in life are people who read example Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala etc.

Importance of reading books to improve writing skills.

One of the skills or secrets to improve ones writing skills is reading of books. I have not seen any person who loves reading or who reads and who is ever stranded in writing. A good reader is a good writer and that means if you want to be a good writer, you must be a good reader.

• When you are a reader especially in the field of Arts, as you are reading, you will come across use of words, whether it is grammar usage, figures of speech or even big words you do not understand. As a reader, you will want to check the meaning of those words thereby knowing the meaning and how to use it and it will expand and improve your vocabulary, also strengthening your writing skills.

• Reading books improves your writing skills because as you are reading from professional authors like Chimamanda Ngozi, Wole Soyinka, Ben Carson, Joyce Meyer etc, the information and how they write will be stored in your mind. You might think you have forgotten it but it would surprise you when you bring it up while writing. So reading far and wide makes you write better.

• Reading keeps you up to date also helping in the skill or reporting or summary.

• Anyone who reads a lot will not pack everything together when writing but will be able to apply some skills in writing like paragraphing, knowing how to write the introduction, body and conclusion.

Do you have the habit of reading books? What kind of book do you prefer to read?

I grew up with the habit of reading books. I think what brought about this was the fact that I grew up in a home where newspapers were bought everyday especially weekends, so I was always attracted by pictures in the newspapers and I used to read the newspapers to satisfy my curiosity. I took this habit to my secondary school and university. I can remember times I got into trouble because I couldn't resist reading novels even during my exams period. I think the only type of books I don't really read is engineering and science books like physics and chemistry, but apart from these I read almost everything tho I enjoy some more than others.

• I read novels especially thrillers like James Hadley chase and Sidney Sheldon, romantic novels like Nora Roberts novels, infact I don't allow any kind of novels to pass me by.

• I read spiritual books like the Bible and books that increase my faith.

• I read books that helps me academically in my field and even outside my field like textbooks.

I read motivational and inspirational books, these are just the few I can mention.

I even have as much as 200 books on my phone tho I'm yet to read them all.
