Location that was surveyed on April 22nd, 2024

The World Smile Project is an international charity program focused on three main aspects: Education, Child Protection and Empowerment of Women, and the Environment. For a long time, the WSP team has been planning an environmentally focused program called the "World Carbon Program," and you can see the initial project has long been planned. See this post.

The implementation of the "World Carbon Program" was delayed due to factors such as cost, time, and location. Following up on this program plan, our team at WSP has initiated preliminary discussions to resume and advance this program.

Program Overview

The World Carbon Program is a collective responsibility to mitigate the impacts of global warming, which are increasingly felt across all sectors of life, both directly and indirectly. This program will focus on mangrove reforestation in wetland ecosystem areas.

These areas serve as a buffer for various aquatic bird species, crabs, fish, and shrimp. By reforesting degraded mangrove areas, we aim to restore biodiversity, which in turn impacts the livelihoods of fishermen communities. The environmental rehabilitation of mangroves will directly and indirectly benefit these fishing communities. Additionally, mangrove plantations not only promote biodiversity but also reduce riverbank and coastal erosion.

Benefits of the program

There are four anticipated outcomes from the implementation of this program, encompassing environmental, societal, economic, and scientific aspects. Most importantly, this program is a long-term Steem Promo Event to the community around the implementation program.

Environment

The World Carbon Program aims to reduce carbon emissions by restoring buffer zones through mangrove reforestation. The restored mangroves will serve as breeding grounds for various waterfowl, crabs, fish, and shrimp species. By expanding mangrove areas, this program not only helps sequester carbon from the atmosphere but also supports the sustainability of various aquatic species. Mangrove ecosystems also contribute to the overall health of the coastal environment by filtering pollutants and providing protection against storm surges.

It is the result we expected

Social

Replanting mangrove forests will directly benefit the surrounding community. The rejuvenated greenery will provide a lush and healthy environment for the local residents. Additionally, mangrove leaves can be utilized as livestock feed and traditional medicine ingredients, offering sustainable additional resources for the community.

Economy

By restoring the mangrove ecosystem, fishermen's catches can increase due to better habitat availability for fish and shrimp. Selling mangrove seedlings can also provide additional income opportunities for the local community. This not only benefits economically but also promotes environmentally sustainable economic development (green economy).

Science

Rehabilitating mangrove forests will create opportunities for environmental research among students and academics in the program's vicinity. This will expand the horizon of knowledge regarding coastal ecosystems and enable innovative solutions to global environmental challenges.

Program Location

Program implementation is envisioned in the coastal fringe marshes and fishpond areas that have suffered damage and erosion in North Aceh Regency. The coastal fringe marshes and fishpond areas in North Aceh Regency are home to a community of fish farmers and fishermen who will directly benefit from the implementation of the World Carbon Program.

Targets of the Program

This program is expected to have a positive impact on approximately 500 people directly involved, as well as thousands more indirectly within the surrounding community. The fish farmers, or "petani tambak" in Indonesian, depend on the health of the coastal ecosystem for their livelihoods. Restoring mangrove forests in this area will yield significant benefits for their livelihood activities. Similarly, local fishermen and the fishing community rely on the marine resources sustained by mangroves.

Beyond the immediate economic benefits, the program's impact is anticipated to extend to other communities, providing indirect benefits to businesses and households dependent on fishing-related activities. The restored mangroves will enhance the resilience of the entire coastal ecosystem and offer long-term sustainability for all who depend on its resources. This is expected to contribute to developing more resilient and prosperous coastal fringe marshes and fishpond areas in North Aceh Regency.

Program Design

There will be planting of 5000 mangrove seedlings in the brackish marshes area and 500 pine trees along the potentially eroding coastline. On the day of implementation, WSP will invite the steemian to participate in the action, it is to emphasize the steem promo event itself.

Implementation Mechanism

The implementation mechanism of this program involves direct participation from the local community in all stages, from preparing mangrove and pine seedlings to the planting and regular maintenance processes. Those involved will receive fair compensation as an incentive to enhance their local economy. Compensation provided includes not only cash but also equipment and fishing gear for fishermen, such as nets and fishing rods.

Engaging the community directly in the program's execution not only ensures project sustainability but also strengthens their involvement and responsibility toward managing the restored coastal ecosystem.

We believe these steps address the interests and needs of the local community. By empowering them to actively participate in conservation efforts, we aim to foster a mutual relationship between environmental sustainability and the socio-economic well-being of coastal communities.

Survey

The initial survey or preliminary assessment was conducted on April 22 to map the area and assess the community's social life in Kuala Krueng Thoe, Tanah Jambo Aye District, Aceh Utara. The survey results are as follows:

  • Representatives of the local community at the program site welcomed this plan and are willing to be involved in providing the necessary seedlings.
  • They are prepared to participate in planting and maintenance according to the program's needs.
  • The surveyed location has a supply of seedlings available for planting.
  • There are also areas within this location suitable for replanting mangroves that have been damaged or died.
  • The community's awareness in this area is quite high, as evidenced by the voluntary planting of many new plants by residents in their own or neighboring fishponds.
  • The potential success of the program is assessed at 80%, based on the enthusiasm of the community and their awareness of the importance of environmental conservation, as well as the growth percentage of previously planted vegetation.

Budget Plan

The estimated budget for seedling, planting, and maintenance activities amounts to IDR 27,500,000 or equivalent to 5,500 steem based on an estimated steem price of IDR 5,000/steem. Calculating for 5,500 seedlings, the total cost is IDR 5,000 per seedling, covering everything from seedling preparation to planting and regular maintenance.

Follow-up

From the results of this survey, an evaluation will be conducted by the WSP International team to determine the potential budget for program implementation, as well as the timing and locations. In addition to this initial assessment, further assessments will be carried out in different locations to identify areas with better potential. There may be multiple implementation sites for this program.

This concludes the presentation of the World Carbon Program plan, and we hope that the Steemit team and other users can support and provide input and ideas for further program development.

I'm feeling the vibe in the pictures. The pictures are so great, and if I get a chance, I will visit this place for sure!

Hopefully there will be a government program to mobilize the community and be directly involved in mangrove planting and forest reforestation activities

I hope so, and this area has been plotted by an international NGO for reforestation and mangrove revitalization area as well, but the most important thing is community self-awareness and willingness

Yes, it's true, if the government only takes action, it will be in vain if people are not aware and don't know the importance of protecting the environment.

I've only got one word for the team...
FANTASTIC!!!

I wish you all the best for this new initiative.
Let me put my thinking cap on and let's see if I can come up with something that can help.

Hi @patjewell, I am waiting for your input and advice, meanwhile, I will arrange a meeting with the team here to make a proper schedule for the implementation. It will involve a large budget and man power as well.

Sorry for the late reply but I've been taking it easy the last couple of days as I had my daughter and her family visiting.
Give me some time to think and I will get back to you. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Overhere I hear a lot of blah blah blah if it comes to carbon footprints while at the same time each tree is cut and parks are removed just like the last green (farmers). Instead the #2 (building/renovating houses) on the list is booming. It all doesn't make sense to me and by now I am allergic to the word 'carbon'.

Since this project is the opposite of what is done here I can only be enthusiastic! Actually, I am super enthusiastic since it feels as if "plant a tree day" is back! Next to that this project will benefit animal life and the fishermen. All I can say is: Super!

You have my support and 'll see what I can think of to do so.

This project is simply to replace the mangrove that has been cut/destroyed by the fish pound owner (who is wealthy and lives in a luxurious house with air cond). The same case is also here. The government grand access to destroy the forest for "investors" to plant palm oil and the other hand arrest local residents to make a simple hut using the trees they grow by themselves.

The goal of what we are doing is only to encourage the local residents to keep some of the trees and replace them with new ones, at least they can keep up those trees for their own good and keep the source of their income (fishing resource). Because we will plant most of those trees on their land and the benefit is directly for them, I hope they will protect it for a while. I won't be involved with officials or government institutions since they will seek personal profit from the project as I have experienced.

It's a good plan especially if people are given the responsibility to take care of their oemwn trees and think a bit ahead.

A neighbour wanted to cut all trees. I told her better leave 1 meter so they grow back again and take care of the water and soil. It will all flush away once it starts raining.

It takes long to replace a tree, manyyears plus the cut tree will set free water plus all the toxic it absorbed during it's life. The more trees are planted the better.

How did that person became the owner.

I hope people keep building their huts and ignore. Here we are not allowed to do anything without lermission of the city, not even choose the paint of your house or gate.
