Dairy game / 25th may, 2023/ Another day working at the hospital

in STEEM FOR BETTERLIFE11 months ago

It was a beautiful Thursday morning when I was already dressed and ready for work.
I called a cap who picked and dropped me at my work location, university of uyo teaching hospital.

It's my third and another interesting day at work. As usual, intern Pharmacists sign the timebook at the accident and emergency department and then retire to various units of assignment.

I reported at my duty post quite very early and got things in position.

Part of my activity for today was patient counseling and documentation. It was a very interesting exercise.

Patients were already waiting for us to begin working immediately. And at around 8:30am I was already on my sit, while talking to various patient one after another.

One of the patients that came in, was with an antirectroviral drug prescription, and well she needed to be counselled accordingly.

I offered the necessary practical steps in protecting herself and her newborn baby. One of which included that she had to be very consistent with her medication so that, the viral load reduces to a point she probably can't transmit to her partner or anyone around her.

She needed to avoid sharing sharp objects with anyone including equipment for manicure and pedicure.

I advised that she never feels down or as if it's the end of the world, while giving her life examples of individuals who have successfully lived with HIV for so many years and they are very happy.

I could see her face beaming with smiles, she was happy and promised never to miss her dose of medication.

Just after attending to a number of patients who were waiting, it was time to visit my patients which I was assigned in the ward.

My patient, a new mum with her little baby were set to be discharged. I loved that they were healthy and sound, as well as satisfied with the treatment and services she received in the hospital.

After reviewing my patients and saying goodbye, It was time to go back to my unit.

On my way to my unit, I found a crowd of people protesting around the hospital premises. I got closer to ask what the problem was.

I realized that this health workers needed a review on thier salary structure. In effect, a raise in the salary of health workers across federal hospital in the country.

According to source, this concerns has been raised but they government of the country paid no attention. Hence, it was time for an industrial strike. No work, no services!!!

All health workers were already closed for the day and packing their bags, this was very sad😭

You don't want to imagine the number of patients who couldn't undergo surgery, access light, oxygen, get drugs as rapidly as possible, get their laboratory tests done, access water and the likes.

Infact right before my eyes, an epileptic child was brought into the hospital, nothing could be done because of the strike and absence of health workers. The parents were immediately refered to a private clinic for immediate treatment.

It was terrible, but this is what happens in Nigeria and the government is yet to meet the new salary structure demands for health workers.

I got to my unit and we were told to fold up and lock up our unit premises, which we simply obeyed. I picked up my belongings and headed out of the hospital as there was nothing more to be done till the industrial strike by health workers was called off.

As I left the hospital, I reported at the community pharmacy outlet I work as a pharmacist. The day wasn't as stressful as I thought but I was happy everything went well.

We had so many patients come in complaining of so many ailments, drugs were issued, some referred for expert hands.

The day was already coming to an end and it was time to go home. I did reach home, rested and got ready for the next day.

You seem to enjoy your new working environment while practising your profession..., I wish you success.

I think I have visited there about four times, I am not sure if some of the old buildings are still there, I heard they did some renovation.

It is a shame that one big reliable hospital in a state is on strike.., what happens to the patient...? What happens to emergency..?

This isn't a good development at all. I hope the Government do something about it soon.

Thank you for sharing your diary.
