Street Culinary and Viennese Würstelstands

Hello everyone. If you ever visit Vienna, one of the reasons you might want to visit again could be the Würstelstands. These are my beloved sausage stands. These independent snack shops sell a variety of sausages and drinks. You can find these stands all over the city, but they are most commonly found outside metro stations or busy tram stops.

I want to say that these stands represent the heart of Vienna's street food culture. You can find many delicious sausages at local stands. If you ask where the nearest sausage stand in Vienna is, rest assured it's not far away.

Today I want to talk to you about popular sausages and delicious toppings added to these sausages. Sausages are usually served on a paper plate with a slice of black or simple white bread, mustard and ketchup included. Of course, you can also order a sausage sandwich if you prefer. The sandwich is made by placing the sausage inside a long bread.

It looks a bit different from the North American-style hot dog, doesn't it? Sausages can be enjoyed as a snack or as a meal at any time of the day. Let me first tell you about the toppings you can get and which ones are free or extra. Mustard and ketchup are usually included in the price. Oh, they might ask you if you want sweet mustard or hot mustard. Most toppings are extra. Gurkerl is pickles, Pfefferoni is peppers. Kren, which is freshly grated horseradish, is my favorite topping. You might need to pay around 50 cents for Kren or any other toppings. However, bread is usually free. Some come with fries, which are usually extra.

Now let me introduce you to several popular sausage types in the capital of Austria. My favorite is Currywurst, but I never say no to others. :)

Frankfurt sausage is a localized version of the sausage from Frankfurt, Germany. However, outside of Austria, Frankfurt sausage is also known as Vienna sausage. It is a thin and long lightly smoked sausage made from beef and pork. It has a mild sweetness and is preferred either on its own or in a sausage sandwich.

Bratwurst is a mildly spicy sausage fried in a flat pan. This classic German sausage variety is consumed at barbecue parties worldwide.

Käsekrainer is a thicker sausage type with some cheese inside. When cooked in a flat pan, the cheese inside the sausage melts and oozes onto the surface of the sausage. Its taste is as you would expect. Käsekrainer is usually sliced before serving. It is one of the most popular sausages in Vienna.

Currywurst is an imported sausage type from Germany. It is a sausage made with curry powder and curry sausage sauce. Although popular in Vienna, it might not be as popular as in Munich. I love this sausage, maybe because I fell in love with currywursts in Munich years ago. Each sausage stand has its own "special" currywurst sauce, which makes each sausage stand unique.

Our other sausage is called Debreziner, named after the town of Debrezin in Hungary. This tasty red meaty pork sausage has the taste of smoked red peppers. The Austrian version of Debreziner may be milder than the Hungarian version.

Waldviertler is a dark-colored lightly smoked sausage type that comes from the forestry region of Lower Austria. Inside, there is beef, pork head, bacon and pork mince. These are mixed with garlic, pepper, coriander seeds, cumin and red pepper. Not all Würstelstands offer this sausage, so I recommend trying it when you find Waldviertler on the menu. Its skin may be a bit tough, but the sausage itself is quite juicy and delicious.

These are some of the most popular sausage types in Vienna. Now I want to show you how sausages are served in two different ways in the Austrian capital.

If you want, you can order Frankfurt sausage in the form of a sausage sandwich. A deep hole is made in the middle of a long bread roll and two halves of Frankfurt sausage are inserted into it. It's also called a hot dog.

Or you can order a Bosna. Bosna is a traditional Austrian sausage sandwich. This is made with various tasty sausages mixed with various spices, onions, mustard or ketchup, served with a mixture of curry powder and garnished with parsley or other greens. Bosna is served on a long bread roll, just like a hot dog bun.

Of course, you can also order sliced sausages in the traditional way. They go great with a glass of soda, a can or a bottle of Austrian beer.

In my opinion, sausage is a great snack or light meal at any time of the day, from early morning to midnight. I hope you get the chance to try all these delicious sausages on your next visit to Vienna. Thank you for reading.
