Children only want a big party if they have friends/family. There are plenty of children who rather stay alone instead of being surrounded by greedy bullies who only stop by to spoil the day and eat the cake.

What children want also depends on what parents say is normal. Memorable is what you like most and if wishes come true, it's also not bad to teach a child not everything is possible.

One of my children had the choice:

1. a big party or
2. Going out. All times it was "going out" from cinemat to theatre to a horse riding park and Disney Land. Not once she said: I rather celebrate with friends, family and the neighbourhood. Did she regret it? I doubt it. For blowing candles and eating cake you don't need a house full or rent a place.
