My memory is inhabited by the days of high school, when we read Casas muertas (Miguel Otero Silva, Monte Ávila, Caracas: 1980). This is the story of a small town of the Venezuelan plains, called Ortiz, that at the end of the 20th century stopped flourishing to become a place with houses masked by death due to yellow fever, malaria and state neglection.

The play starts with a conversation between Edipo and the Priest of Jupiter, who is going to ask for help to save Tebas, sunk in a pest that fills the city with pain singings and grim moans:

Ha invadido la ciudad el dios que la enciende en fiebre; la destructora peste que deja deshabitada la mansión de Cadmo y llena el infierno con nuestras lágrimas y gemidos (p.472).

The god that turns on the fever has invaded the city; the destructive pest that leaves uninhabited the mansion of Cadmo and fills hell with our tears and moans (p.472).

Los cadáveres insepultos yacen, inspirando lástima, sobre el suelo en el que se asienta la muerte; jóvenes esposas y encanecidas madres gimen al pie de los altares, implorando remedio a tan aflictiva calamidad (p. 477).

The unburied corpses lay, inspiring pity, above the ground in which death remains; young wives and grey haired mothers moan at the bottom of the shrines, begging for a cure to such an afflictive calamity (p. 477).

Edipo investiga el crimen y descubre dos crudas realidades: es hijo de Layo y Yocasta. Al primero ha dado muerte en un episodio de camino y con la segunda se ha desposado, cuando se convierte en rey de Tebas al revelar los enigmas de la Esfinge.

Edipo investigates the crime and discovers two harsh realities: he's the son of Layo and Yocasta. The first he killed in a chapter along the way and the second he married, when he becomes king of Tebas revealing the riddles of the Sphinx.

En medio de la borrasca por tan temible tragedia, extirpa sus ojos y sale desterrado de Tebas. Se cumple con esto la profecía del oráculo.

Amidst depression for such dreadful tragedy, he removes his eyes and is banished from Tebas. With this the prophecy of the oracle is fulfilled.
